According to the hardware specs of the 2Wire 3800HGV-B HomePortal it's IPv6 capable but I see no settings on it that allows me to turn on IPv6 (if not for the very least to use with IPv6 link-local). Are there plans for a new firmware (soon) to enable support for this again?

So what benefit do you percieve IPv6 will do for you? The only thing I see for it is that now we can have enough IP addresses to make our toasters and coffee makers internet capable devices too.

IPv6 LinkLocal ability would be useful for a number of reasons mainly for home media between my desktops/laptops and media devices (tv, iPad, etc) which are all of course IPv6 capable. Would also mean that my main machine on which is on DMZ+ mode in order to tunnel IPv6 could also have a link-local IPv6 address so that the rest of the machines can still connect to it in a LAN since (where as the IPv4 on account of the DMZ+ is now using a public IP).
Far as Benefits of IPv6 over IPv4 read http://www.att.com/esupport/ipv6.jsp
Though they don't exactly cover some of the deeper benefits other than just quanity.

There is no reason you cannot run IPv6 in your internal LAN. Even if the RG is serving as your backbone switch, it should switch the Ethernet packets carrying the IPv6 with nary a care.

Things I've read, the IPv6 will occur on ATT servers, not on the RG. We will be 1-2 layers behind a public IP address and the server for IPv6 will be between us and the internet. Possibly we will get 10.0.... IP addresses for this and why they deleted them from use in the RG recently. ![]()

How do the v6 packets come in if AT&T isn't routing them?
How can I turn on the Neighbor Discovery Protocol deamon when such a service doesn't exist on the router?
How do I enable the 6-to-4 tunnel when such a service doesn't exist on the router?

And here's the big question...
How do I bypass the 3801 gateway and put it in real bridge mode so my ipv6 gateway can get a public WAN address that is not the{word filter evasion}same as the 2wire's assignment?
DMZplus mode is lame. My souped-up Linksys WRT54GS with OpenWRT that I've been doing native v6 with for the last 8 years just can't be used with uverse because of this crappy 2wire 3801 hardware.
I've had uverse since this Friday @ 4:30pm. I spent all Saturday messing with settings and even wasted $50 on ConnectTech to try to solve this, and it just isn't possible to have native v6 on the LAN even with a seperate gateway behind this junk 2wire3801 hardware.
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
I sure want to group this in the malice category.. Monday @ 8am I'm cancelling uverse and staying with Comcast. Bye! In a consumer society, always vote with your wallet.

I was referencing the original poster's desire to run "IPv6 LinkLocal." You can run IPv6 over your private Ethernet whether or not the RG understands and/or routes it. In fact, IPv6 routers won't route traffic addressed between link-local addresses.
If you want to speak non-tunneled IPv6 with the world, then yes, of course, the RG has to understand and route it. But the vast majority of the world isn't any more ready for IPv6 than a Uverse subscriber. I'd rather have solid reliable IPv4 than IPv6 if I have to have the spotty service my Cable Internet provider gave me.

Excuse me while I collect the Uverse hardware and return it to my local UPS store. What a major fail to not allow the use of customer routers that may provide specialized services

Back to v6 now
by way of a tunnel on my router (using a competitor's ISP that is also not yet native v6 capable), but at least with them I can use my custom router that has 6to4 capability to hurricane electric's tunnel service so I can stay native v6 on my LAN. ![]()

NAT behind a NAT didn't work for me nor did DMZplus mode. My WAN side didn't work shared.
