Thanks for the replies!
In looking at inid that is a 2wire i38hg device? What I have appears to be the 2wire 3800HGV and it has a coax jack, 4 port ethernet, one "wan" port (FFTN installs -- not used here) and RJ11 jacks for voice which the inid device I am using the ethernet ports only.
I see posts about "uv realtime" that would be interesting to look at. I'd like in the end to disable the wireless in the 2wire device since I am using my own Apple wireless extreme router since it is a dual band router. That part works great as I put it into bridged mode. For me accessing http://192.168.1.254 I've tried that from hard wire into the Apple device and also hard ware into the 2wire device with no luck. Only thing I have not tried is connected to the wireless provided by the 2wire into 192.168.1.254.

The solution here was go to:
and ignore what is printed on the 2wire device, this gets me into the 2wire router page and I was able to disable the 2wire wireless since I am using my Apple Extreme device as it has dual-band. The system password for the router does work which is printed on the side of the device.
