vista and xp cant go through the wifi at the same time. help!

hello. i just signed up here yesterday.

so...

yeahhh..

we'll have a girls' night tonight w/ my friends. but, i have this problem..

i have an XP laptop, and my bestfriend has vista. we are trying to connect hers to my wifi, but it wont go through. i mean, yes, it does go through but whenever hers gets connected, mine will disconnect automatically. and whenever her vista is off, i can go through. i dunno what the problem is. i dont wanna contact TS again. my friend who works as TS in att is on vacation. and im so helpless and aggreviated. last night, it was my tv, now my computer. i dont wanna be embarrassed from my friends. they will bring their laptops bec they all knew i have wifi network in my apartment,. and we are all excited for tonight. i really wanna speak to a higher person now. like a manager but i dont think a manager can solve this. is my network bad? or my gateway? i have no device that could interrupt the signals. if some of you could advice me what to do, i think theres no need for me to contact att.

Are both computers up to date with their Microsoft updates? We had a big issue with XP and Vista on the same network when we first got Vista and it ended up being an issue that was fixed with an XP update.

The conflict between XP and Vista happened both wired and wireless, so if she's in the same boat that won't fix it.

           if it is  the same problem u had    guess so    was hoping for the best is all and some sort of  conflict with security or ip range   dunno

none of your answers fixed the prob. i ran cat5- yes she got connected. but the rg is in the bedroom, and cat5 is not too long so we cant bring the laptop in the living room. and my other friends are coming. oh gawd!! att!! what's going on??!! it's a shame that i will only allow xp laptops  to cobnnect. coz if vista comes through- we'll (xp) all be disconnected!!

yes. my friend from asia works for microsoft and she used to update my OS/system. my bestfriend's vista notebook is a 4 month old. we never had problems like this in her place. she also have uverse. i think my gateway is bad!!! or it has to be reconfigured.

welp sounds like with wha u said u have a xp vrs vista problem and not wireless problem..

i really dont think its the rg3800 less u have something really weird tweaked...

for giggles u may have to put them on the same network  group....

both or all machines that come over set up to network together rather than just sshare the internet...

the method to do this willl be a lil dif on xp and vista but basicaly the same way   go into properties and change the network name to "asi"  or whatever..

u may also have to run network wizard maybe  >>   dunno just out loud thinking  :__P)

The problem that I ran in to was that XP and Vista both wanted to be the master browser on the network and since Vista was the newer OS, it would win the fight each time.

If you look in the system event log on the XP machine and you see log entries for master browser elections, you're having the same issue.

IMHO ....Randy is right.  Your problem seems to be a conflict between Vista and XP and has nothing to do with your U-verse wireless.  We have two Vista powered laptops on wireless and our desktop is XP via ethernet cable.  We don't have a problem because we don't have a home network set up.  No need for it.  It's a lot easier to use my 16 gb thumb drive anyway and just physically move files from one pc to another.  But that rarely is needed....in our case.

what do you mean by network name on properties? what properties?

do u mean connect the notebook to the network manually? i've done that. still wont go through. if at&t knows that vista will always win the fight of OS they should have a invented a gateway that controls it/to balance it. it's like get uverse. keep your vistas. throw away your xps coz vistas rule.

Look at the link that I posted and try the fix in there to disable the master browser service on the XP machines. Let us know if it fixes the problem.

The issue is not unique to Uverse.

What are the pc's named?  I have seen issues where someone had multiple computers named the same, when the rg tries to connect, it flips out.  i would also check and make sure that the computer's are NOT set up for static ip addresses.  if they are trying to share the same ip address, this will throw most routers into fits.

aw gawd. do**bleep**e nakuno! it was the wireless settings said the agent. she changed it to wep-open. for us to go through. we all got connected. she even changed my wireless key to my cell # 916-803-****.. she was great! she got it fixed in 10 mins! we dont set our ip to static. she said she'll call me back after 3 days to make a follow up on me. and i will have my network be unsecured so i wont have to bother entering any password. so, got to go guys. thanks for all the advice. i am now partying with my girls here. have a good night.

I don't understand how one computer would connect and boot off the other if it was a wireless security setting.

Running your network unsecured is risky, though.

It's only an issue if you set up a work group. If all you want to do is to get to the Internet, you just have to plug it in. Of couse with wireless, you do need to get the settings right. If you want to share files you do have to set up file sharing and get your firewall to agree etc etc. 

But, this master browser thing is related to work groups.

Usually for vista it is WEP-OPEN

while for XP its WPA-PSK

WPA-PSK - works on our vista machine, xp home, and xp pro.  XP's are SP3.  Delete your home network from the list on the PC's, then re-discover and type in the key.  It should work.  Make sure you have enough address space in the DHCP pool.

I had an XP computer here running on my wireless network, and Sharon bought her laptop which is using Vista.  All I did on each computer was have them detect the network.  I typed in the key and they worked.  I never had to change the security settings for either one.  They just connected.
