Check to see if it is the phantom of the mute. IR (usually for info) gets corrupted to STB mute.
To clear phantom mute - att/ok - 955 - att - enter - mute - att/ok - 955 - tv - enter
At the mute step look for the sound icon saying it is set at 25.

Do you have another TV you can try the box on? If so swap it out and see if the problem moves. If it does, it'm probably the DVR, if it doesn't then it's your reciever.

No phanotm mute issue as i use a logitech harmony remote for everything.
I left for a couple of hours and came back and all is fine again. Still not sure what caused this.

What you described did not sound like phantom mute & there have not been any recent posts about it. But, I think it is something that has to be checked if there is no sound.
The Logitech Harmony does not prevent it. The STB does not know which remote generated the signal. It just reacts to what hits the sensor.
I have a Logitech Harmony & have generated a phantom mute & a number of other unwanted commands. It is just easier to fix it with the Harmony.
You did not mention if you have another TV. I guess most people do.
When you see a problem, see if it is on multiple TVs. Swapping, as oufan suggested, is usually a good troubleshooting technique.
If this happens again try an analog connection to see if it is an HDMI problem..
