"Maximum potential? What does that mean? Are you implying that somehow the service miraculously begins working better over the first 30 days? Rubbish."
what the hey ??????? that is pretty tactfull imho
your posts are rubbish !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (not all)
its like the forum was invaded by first week of teir I class or some nest of telemarketers trying out what they think they know about u-verse ?
there are about 5 to 6 new peeps who have signed up of late that fit this bill imho....
if u post good answers and are helping out then its all good......
but of late there has been a lot of off the wall posts going around aka your time zone casuses bad tv and pixelation etc ??
some of us have been helping out a long time around here and really dont mind the help at all !!!!!!!!!!
as long as it productive and truthfull and not some crazy comments (of late)
my take

FuzioN, we have an excellent moderator in Optimus Prime. (OP)
Believe me, if he felt that Joe's post, or anyone's posts, were not in line with the fprum guidlelines, it would be history!
You are taking it completely the wrong way.

I'm sorry that you feel I'm not being friendly. My posts and tone have nothing do to with friendship. The issue is information accuracy.
There are probably at least 200 people who post here regularly. I would wager that there are five to ten times that many who come here to read but don't post, and they come here because they're looking for a spectrum of accurate information about the U-Verse product from end users who have experience with it.
I invite you and anyone else to post anything you want that's a valuable piece of information, but it has to be accurate. The reason I'm responding to many of your posts refuting what you have said is that your information is incorrect. You are not posting an opinion or subjective thoughts on a topic, you are posting what you claim to be factual information. You are not qualifying your statements with phrases like "I believe I read ..." or "If it works like this other, related example ...". You are not providing links or references supporting your statements, such as a page in the manual or a website with an explanation/example.
At first, I responded to these posts of yours with a suggestive and tactful response to hint to you that you need to be more careful with the facts and research your answers more thoroughly, but to date, you have not done so. You continue to post incorrect information while making no visible effort to ensure that your answers are correct. Because of that, the time for tactful suggestions has passed, and the responses you are seeing to your posts are now a bit more direct.
As long as you continue to post incorrect information, someone else will come along and correct it, and you cannot expect them to always be polite and courteous. The other posters on this forum are not your first line of defense for information accuracy -- you are. It is your responsibility to ensure the accuracy of your facts before you post, not ours.
No one will judge you because you don't have the right answer. But you will be judged on the efforts you make to find the right answers.

This is something that I really wanna hear from the start. KUDOS!!! Once again, I do accept my mistakes and I apologize to you somejoe7777 and to the others like pip and randyl for the misunderstandings. If you have something in your minds that you think I need to learn, don't hesitate to PM me. As for the links and references on all the posts that I made, I do have some of them while some are based on my own experiences. Don't worry, I will edit most of my posts and include links and references to prove that it is true in many ways. You know, when you have the service like uverse and you are not techy or knowledgeable enough, tendencies are you try to be good even though you're not (that's what i felt personally).
I, once again APOLOGIZE TO ALL OF YOU for the misunderstandings that we have. PEACE!

What do you mean give at&t a call? I have and they have sent no less than 4 technicians out and they have replaced 4 boxes. Evidently, they don't know what is wrong or they don't want to admit there is a problem. Obviously there is a problem and a wide spread problem at that given the size of this thread. So I have taken some advise here and I am happy to report that unplugging the HD fan eliminated the noise. Yea..................... I'll report back if it starts making noise again, or if the HD fails due to not having a fan.
BTW, I noticed the HD is a standard Seagate 160 GB 5 1/4 inch drive. I got a few spare 250s around. Can these drives be replaced and what format do they need to be?
Cannot wait for my ears to stop ringing..............

I just found this thread, thanks for all the great information. My Uverse was installed in January 09. I love the service, I'm in the San Antonio TX market. I have a VIP 1216 DVR and the high pitched noise started a couple of weeks ago. After reading about all of the possible culprits and solutions I wanted to take the easy route first as I'm not a technical guy. I pulled the box out of my three tier entertailment center, set it on its side, let it breathe, and viola, 5 minutes later...no noise! Not sure if this works for everyone but it has worked great for me. Thanks again!
Glad that solution worked for you. Welcome to Uverse.

IT WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!! And even worse, my fiance didn't always hear it, so I thought I *WAS* crazy! Anyway, I can't tell you how many times I restarted the stupid box, because for the few blessed second the d@mn thing wasn't running and I could have some peace.
THANK YOU to all of you who suggested moving the box from other equipment. We had ours sitting on top of our DVD player, which sat on the shelf above the tv (tv hutch). I moved the box off the DVD player, and put it atop the stand, and so far...no noise!!!!
The strange thing is, we have an almost similar set-up upstairs, where the U-Verse box sits on top of the DVD player. But the 2 peices of equipment are about 2 1/2 feet below the TV. We've never had the high pitch problem from that group.

Also, I can't believe this thread has been going since 2007, and the issue still remains.

Not everyone has experienced the high pitched whine coming from the dvr stb. I have had UV for over 2 1/2 years without a peep. So IMO there is nothing that can be done definitively about an issue that doesn't happen regularly. Like this one. At least there is a way to resolve it.

I'm very pleased with my DVR. It is so quiet.
Now, it replaced an old cable company DVR that drove me nuts. I had to isolate that thing with a bunch of different types of foam rubber, etc. It caused my whole A/V case to resonate and fill the room with hum.
With the new one, no isolation is needed. I don't know if I'm lucky or what, but the thing is just quiet.

This is very true. The first day I noticed this high pitch noise was when I was watching t.v. with 6 others and I was the only one that could hear a high pitch noise. I ended up getting a headache and had to leave. For a week I simply avoided my living room until I couldn't take it anymore and completely dismantled my entertainment area. I eventually discovered it was the at&t box. The box appears to only emit this high pitch sound when it is relatively hot out. I tried unplugging it and letting it sit for awhile as well as giving it more room to breathe. However, this was all for naught.
I have read on here that this is caused by the fan, but I don't want to take it apart. I was hoping for a simple fix, but since this thread has been around for over 3 years, it appears at&t doesn't care. I really hate having to muffel the sound with a blanket because I don't want to wreck the box. Yet, I don't see any other options. I am not going to walk around popping pills to avoid getting migraines due to the fact that I switched to at&t.
