Just plug it back in if you need to return the equipment. There are no stickers on the box that prevent you from opening the box.
AT&T replace these boxes like hotcakes. There's never any questions asked when I have replaced my DVR box 4 times. That's before I decided to unplugged the fan instead of replacing every week

Do you really think Id have said it wasnt the fan and it was the hard drive unless I had actually confirmed it in "some" way?
Well, nevermind. I know a lot of people insist on certain things when they havnt checked it, but that is not the case here...its the HD, and ATT/Motorola need to get off their collective a*** and get it taken care of...
I am just guessing that the HD is a cheaper or different version that the ones that do not make noise...

Good point. How did you confirm it? Did you try unpluggin the fan?Thats all I am asking you to try
It takes a mere 5 minutes at most. Perhaps you can do the community a favor and confirm that it can be both the fan and hard drive.

Yes, I'd like to know too, since a few people mentioned that after they moved the DVR, the noise stopped for them.
It helps us and others to know the end of results of these things. ![]()

Thanks for that info! I tried sitting ours on it's side after reading your message and I haven't heard any noise! Its only been three days but that is a long time to me when you consider the fact that I was hearing it every day.
It looks awkward, though.

Well, heres what happened. The other night, our TV froze and so did the internet. TV came back, internet didnt (ethernet or wireless). Long story short, AT&T sent a high level tech out who replaced the gateway, and my DVR. Before replacing it, he tried moving it to various locations. Noise continued. Final was moving it to the basement, which will be our normal TV watching room (just finished it, and moved computer down)...still made the noise. He replaced it with a new one, and no noise now. Did that yesterday (Sunday) morning.
I still believe its a bad batch of DVRs out there...
He also mentioned that Illinois has Cisco boxes...dont know if they started with them, or if its a retro deal, but I am still hoping they make it to Indiana...but I REALLY hope the noise is gone for good...

We just had ours installed yesterday and the high pitch whine was immediate. They came out today with a replacement box, and this time the noise was there even with the box turned off (plugged in, but switched off). So I Googled and found this thread. I've had it on its right side for the past hour and no more noise (so far). It's completely clear on one right (was the top) and 3 inches of clearance on the left (was the bottom). And yeah, it looks lame, but I'll live with that instead of the whine.
It's got to be a cooling fan issue as mentioned already. Now that I've got more ventilation on what was the bottom side, it seems to have made the difference.
Good luck.

The high-pitched noise here is bad enough, my first google search was literally "uverse scream".
After reading this thread, I was considering the fan disconnect thing -- although admittedly I was basically convinced that the sound was power-related rather than mechanical, just based on its sound. At any rate, thought I'd try putting the thing on its side first, particularly since I haven't finalized wiring yet and that is something that I can do with relative ease even while it is running -- which it was definitely doing, both running and screaming away per usual.
Low and behold, after about 5 minutes of sitting on its side and my sending some cooler air its way to hurry it along, I'll be darned if the noise didn't suddenly peter out completely, just leaving the typical hum you'd expect off the stuff in that neck of the woods.
So you've convinced me! At least in my case, it definitely seems likely that it is heat/ventilation related, and the fan would certainly be the likely culprit in that case. I'll probably still disconnect it so that the box can go back where it belongs (seriously, it should have no problem staying cool there regardless. Either the thing runs way too hot or the thermostat is set way too sensitive), with the plan of swapping it for the Cisco gear folks have mentioned once that's available in this region. HDMI audio problem alone is a good enough reason for that!
Internet wins again! Thanks all!

I have the same high-pitched noise as everyone else. It's been driving me crazy, and I think I have finally found a solution. Feeling how hot the lid to the box was, I took out 3 screws, took off the lid, and I have not had the high pitch noise return in two days since taking the lid off.
Im assuming taking the lid off has released a sufficient amount of heat off the hard drive relieving it of any heat stress. It doesn't look to pretty, but it gets the job done, no more high pitched noises. Everyone still having the high-pitched noise please give this a try and report back your success.

I subscribed to U-verse TV on or around September 1st.
My DVR has been noise-free, 'til today.
I repositioned my box behind a 52" Sony TV and immediately detected the U-verse scream
I tried to unplug the box but it made no difference.
Finally, i hooked up with this chat string and put the box on it's side - by - side with the TV.
The high pitched sound vanished within minutes. Kudos to this site and all the valuable chatter!
Thanks agan!

Just wanted to give an update on the removal of the lid. It's been about four days now or so, since I've removed the lid and the high pitched noise is STILL GONE. For those of you still going crazy from the high-pitched noise please give this a try. My unit sits on it's own shelf with another shelf about six inches above it, so my box isn't noticeably missing it's lid unless you really get down and look.
This solution will have to do, until hopefully AT&T decides to do something about it, and gets us all new boxes. If you do decide to use this solution, please unplug it first, be careful, and keep the inside dust free with a can of computer duster.

The problem we are having is a fairly simple one to solve. First, the cause;
When the DVR heats up, the unit tries to fire up the little fan under the hard drive to cool it off. This fan is not supplied with enough power in some of the motorola boxes, and since it is trying to spin and cannot, it screeches at the oh so familiar 17khz tone. The simple solution is to find a way to keep the unit under the threshhold that tells it it is too hot. Some people in the thread have done this by moving the unit, standing on its side, or putting laptop coolers / spacers under the unit or removing the lid.
By swapping it out, you may get a unit that runs slightly cooler (or maybe the fan actually works), but that is a crapshoot.
The alternate solution is to open the unit and disconnect the power jumper to the fan (which is inoperational anyway).
Bear in mind that doing so is against the terms of service and you're doing it at your own risk - but I uh, heard from a guy that the humming stops the moment that fan isn't powered.
Just sayin'

I have had UVerse for 10 months with no noise.
The moment we got a new 50" plasma and actual real TV console, set up the Motorola Box on top of a DVD player and underneath a narrow speaker (it's still half ventilated - I thought this was enough), and added HD channels..... the noise. We thought it was the TV, as many plasma owners report the same problem.... the Panasonic guy came out to have a look and did we ever feel dumb... lo and behold, it is the AT&T Box.
Thank you for the solutions! I am about to sit the box on it's side, it's gotta be a ventiliation/fan issue.

If there's room, maybe put something under the STB that elevates it and gives more airflow, like wood blocks or something under each corner?
Let us know how your experiment works with it on its side.

Because I don't have the space to prop the DVR on its side, and I don't want to remove the cover from it permanently, I decided to try to force more air around it. Using a little fan behind the unit, I am blowing a bit of air across the unit to help cool it. The noise stopped in under five minutes, and has not yet returned. Tonight I'm going to purchase a cheap little USB-powered fan on Ebay that will plug into the DVR's rear USB port as a permanent fix.
Cheers!
Jim

I have had the U-verse service for one week and been thru 4 DVR boxes. How ATT plans on making money on the service is beyond me. These boxes are crap. Box #1 went out after 1 day with bad video. It would work until the unit got warm, then the video goes out slowly to a blank screen. Box #2 had the high pitched noise, wife and kids said it has to go. Box #3 froze up on a regular basis, several times a day. Box #4 is still working but has the high pitched noise. My ears are still ringing.
The service has been superb, but the equipment is flawed. I may be forced to go back to Dish. I guess I will try un-plugging the fan as has been mentioned because this noise is driving us crazy. Unfortunately I have been fighting with this system for most of my Thanksgiving vacation. Thanks AT&T. And why don't your service personnel know about this problem?

Just a suggestion seadoodude1, give AT&T a call and request for a technician dispatch to take a look into your system and equipments. Because as far as I know, you are still under their 30 days maintenance period. Meaning, your uverse is not yet at it's maximum potential. My advice is, be patient and give it a chance.

Maximum potential? What does that mean? Are you implying that somehow the service miraculously begins working better over the first 30 days? Rubbish.

The high-pitched noise associated with the DVR is a heat-related symptom, as is your blank screens and freeze-ups.
Do you have this unit in an enclosed cabinet or other non-ventilated space? If so, this is the source of the problem. These boxes are doing a fair amount of processing, and generate a decent amount of heat. You will need to find a method to ventilate and cool this box, even if that means just putting it outside the enclosure you currently have it in.

That is absolutely correct showtime48. I do accept any corrections coming from Master of the Universe, I mean master of uverse like SomeJoe7777 but I would really appreciate it if he will do it in a nicer way though.
But I did tell the truth that UVERSE is not yet in it's maximum potential, did I showtime48? Phase 2 and 3 of the THDVR is not yet released and there's more to come, I suppose.

The maintenance period does not apply to the U-verse product. AT&T puts certain ADSL circuits on a 14 day ramp-up processs, where performance gradually improves. I think some people are mistakenly applying that information to U-verse. With U-verse you should be at full speed from day 1.

Actually FuzioN, I think Joe was being quite tactful. In fact, much more so than many other posts I have seen on here.

You made a suggestion to someone else in another thread that need should research the product before signing up for it.
I suggest you really sit down and read through many of the posts on here and find out what is fact and fiction. It's amazing what we have all learned on here, but even more amazing, on the times when I have called for TS and then explained something to them and they have found out what I have told them to be true, the reactions from the people on the other end of the line.
