We have had Uverse for two weeks and have had a load of problems. Last night around midnight the entire service went down for like 15 minutes. the power in house worked but none of the Uverse services did including the phone. I thought the purpose of the backup was to make sure your phone worked at all times. Does the battery backup only help when the actual power in the house goes down? It is pretty scary to me that when Uverse service goes down none of our home phones will work either

Yes, that is the nature of any VOIP service. If that is a concern and you do not feel having a cell phone is an adequate backup, you should have traditional POTS phone service.

Well, um, yeah. The battery backup provides backup power. Otherwise, VOIP goes down when the power does. It's not a magic fix-anything-that-might-be-wrong-with-your-uverse-
Problems other than power loss have other solutions. Call U-verse techincal support to get your problems resolved (I recommend using a Cell phone). There are several reasons I didn't convert my AT&T POTS line to Uverse voice, and loss of service during power outage was only of the reasons.
