I just wanted to say, I'm still on the $50.00 plan, but I'm using an Unlocked, Rooted, and Custom Rom Samsung Galaxy S smartphone.
Is there anything for this phone I could do, because there is a lot of settings I can change.
Also, under GSM setting, I have an EDGE connection and under WCDMA I get a constant switch between HSDPA connection and 3G connection. Also, its a Phoenix Ultimate ROM I think.
Also, these are the Default APN settings it has:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com (on my flipphone, this can be left blank and internet works)
Port: 80
Username: <none>
Password: <none>
Server: <none> (what is this for?)
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMSC Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMSC Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: <none>
APN Type: internet + mms

Some representatives are more helpful than others are...if I were you, I would keep calling maybe two or three more times until you get a rep that is competent and seems that they sincerely are working hard to try and help you. If you strike out two or three more times, I think it would be safe to say that AT&T is not interested in helping you.
Good luck!

Buy the data packets offered, get contract, or use wifi.. You are offered same options as everyone else.

{please keep it courteous}... what, do you think they aren't being greedy when a GoPhone can have unlimited internet but smartphones have to pay for it when a 500MB data package for $25 on my phone won't even last a week.
I don't care what you say or think, they are greedy!
I'm still looking into this matter, I still have no solution, most proxies I try result in a MediaNET page or no internet...

My flipphone bearly has a 1" screen, so using internet is tedious on it and I have a Galaxy S now and I know it's a smartphone but come on, There has got to be a way to get data on it with the $50 plan. Please.

When I re-think your situation, you are wanting to use your Captivate Galaxy S on the $50 Unlimited Talk, Text, & Web plan, correct? If so, it cannot be done. AT&T does not support pay-per-use data for smartphones being used as GoPhones any longer. You will not be able to enjoy the benefits of unlimited data as long as you intend to use your Captivate on the $50/monthly plan.

Can't someone see where I'm coming from. I'm only 15, so I can't get a job (I would if somewhere nearby would hire.)

Now, you CAN purchase a separate data package to use with your Captivate on the $50 plan, but it will not be safe to say that it's "unlimited" data. You can choose a $25 data package for an allotment of 500MB of data if you choose.
Your situation could also be that you are trying to do what I described in the last paragraph, which is purchase a separate data package, but data just simply is not working for you.
Personally, I am using both of my Samsung Captivate Galaxy S and iPhone 3GS smartphones on the $0.10 a minute plan with unlimited messaging. When I want to use data, I use Wi-Fi when it's available. I can understand your situation because Wi-Fi is not around almost all the time like a cellular data connection usually is most of the time.
Pardon my lack of paying attention or I would have said something earlier.

I have a thought on what might work. My flip phone connects with GPRS and my smartphone has either H E or 3G connection. It has before had GPRS (G) but I was far from any AT&T towers. I'm wondering if I can force my phone to connect to a GPRS network if it will work. I did notice a considerably more data use on a GPRS connection. I have a gsm and a wdcma I think option on my phone is there an apn or something to force a GPRS connection?
Not gonna work even if you switch to GPRS/EDGE. Already tried it on my Thrive. Known smartphones are being blocked from pay per use data based on IMEI and unfortunately, the Samsung Captivate is a known smartphone. If you want to be able to use unlimited data with a smartphone, you'll have to find one whose IMEI isn't known by AT&T.
As for why unlimited data is available for feature phones but not for smartphones, you've already hit on the issue earlier. It's much easier to use up bandwidth on a smartphone than on a feature phone. Back when I only had a feature phone with MEdia Net package, I was hard pressed to use 50MB in a month. With a smartphone, my usage jumped to at least 1GB per month.

GalaxyS isn't that known... okay...
either way... i'm pretty sure changing my imei is illegal, so Ill keep
calling att until i get someone that can help with this. Someone must be compasionent enough to do something.
EDIT:
How do I force a GPRS (not EDGE) connection anyway, I want to try something.
Also I have 3G watchdog and I have no data usage and my phone was on GPRS for 5 minutes and the 3G watchdog jumped to about 10MB usage.

you won't find your answer here, google the topic and you would probably find some answer elsewhere.

Look, AT&T knows what phone you are using. Part of the IMEI is the Type Allocation Code, which identifies EXACTLY what make and model of phone you're using. There's an online searchable database of these numbers, so it isn't difficult for AT&T to block these.
There's no way around this by forcing your phone to use a GPRS connection, or routing it through proxies. Eventually, you have to hit the AT&T APN's, and they will block your phone.

UPDATE: I got one day left to get this to work. My month runs out tomorrow. I've been using the proxy apn alot and i've gotten luck on it, some connections worked for a while... but i cant get a reliable proxy... a lot of them still bring me to the media net page.

That was a huge forum bump.
Sadly, I dropped AT&T and now I use my Galaxy S with a T-Mobile SIM. The internet may only be 2G but it works and $50 allows around 200MB 4G then unlimited 2G.
Sorry, AT&T.

I got offered a older I Phone from my girlfriend tonight and I was thinking about taking it. But after reading all the tryed hacks, sim tricks, unlocked phones and company tricks. I am going to stay with my Pantech P7040 which isn't flashy as the Iphone but, I can use all the option on my $50 prepaid plan. I have a Ipod Touch and it would be the same If I had the Iphone. Hopefully AT&T will unleash the hold they have on the data for the 50.00 unlimted for smartphones.
