Hi
I'm traveling to US in the short run. I have bought a pay as you go AT&T sim card from eBay in order to reduce roaming costs. I just wanna know if I can activate it through the web www.wireless.att.com/activations/ from my country or I must be in US.
On the other hand, the card has a valid period of 30 days since it is activated. Is it true?
Thanks

Hi , Yes you can do it by this website
https://www.wireless.att.com/GoPhoneWeb/goPhoneLan
but it will request a USA zip code to continue with the activation

Thanks RiotGirrrl.
I have another doubt about price plans and its conditions. I'll mostly have incoming calls so I think $.25 Simple Plan suits me best, but if my phone number has a CA area code and I travel to NV, will I be charged roaming in these calls or in SMS? Or is it free call and SMS reception within all US with this plan?
Thank you!

Your Welcome. The Prepaid Gophone is Nation Wide so you can travel from CA to NV , no roaming or longdistance charges . Remember the sms cost is .20 receive/send each one.

Hi, I have tried again and again using different browsers and different computers to active my SIM through activations web interface but it always fails when I try to enter email address confirmation because @ character is not accepted.
Step 2 Personal Information:
..
*E-mail Address: firstnamelastname@yahoo.de <-- ok, no problem
*E-mail Address Confirmation: firstnamelastname<--- impossible to provide @ character here
..
Thx.
Best regards

I would try clearing your browser history or use another PC.
But if you still cannot activate your SIM because it won't accept the special character in the e-mail confirmation field, then I would contact customer service for activation assistance. If you can wait to activate until you are in the US, the phone number is 1-800-331-0500. If you need to get it activated while still abroad (due to the 30 day activation limit), I'd try calling at&t's international customer service number (+1-916-843-4685). When you contact customer service, you may need to state "customer service" at every menu prompt in order to exit at&t's IVR system and get through to a live representative.

I am travelling to the US next week from Australia and am trying to activate my pay as you go sim card. I am using the zip code where I am spending the most time (Alexandria, Virginia) but giving my cousins address in Wichita Kansas. I have tried to actiovate for days but keep getting the same message
ERROR
GP038: The activation has taken longer than normal. Please try again later. from the AT&T website. Am I doing something wrong or is it because I have an Australian email address that is the problem?
Any help would be appreciated.

If you can wait until you reach the US to activate your SIM, that's what I would do. On-line activation hasn't worked for me with the last two SIMs I've activated - was instructed to call customer service to complete the activation anyway - and that was from within the US. So I would just wait until you arrive and then contact customer service or go to the nearest at&t Corporate store as they will be able to help you with activation/plan selection, etc.

Hello I am having trouble getting my new passcode that is sent by sms.
I am in Canada and activated my account online and everything went smoothly. When I tried to login to my account the site told me a sms was sent to me with a new account passcode. With the AT&T sim in my phone it just says its for emergency calls only and in the settings it does not say which network that it is connected to and I dont think the sms can be recieved while in Canada. Is there a way to get a new passcode from outside the US? I want to add funds to the account before going to the US.

As far as I know there would not be a way to receive the passcode to establish your on-line account access from outside the US.
If you purchase an unused refill card from eBay, etc., I'd think you could add funds to your account that way (by calling the phone number given on the refill card). You might also be able to refill by using at&t's IVR system (1-800-331-0500) or their international customer care department (+1-916-843-4685), but I don't know if they will provide support to prepaid customers who aren't in the US since at&t's prepaid service does not allow for international roaming outside of Mexico.

Hey, I also had the same problem with the @ character when I registered my two SIM cards two days ago. Although the @ on my Swiss keyboard is at the same place as on an US keyboard it did not work. Copy and paste didn't work either, so I tried the code ALT+64 that luckily worked ;-)
Because it is not possible to receive SMS (new passcode after registration) while abroad I won't be able to add money until 7 May. I hope that would not be a problem and my SIM cards will work when I'm in the U.S. How long can the balance remain at $0 after first activation until the mobile number will be deactivated? 13 days should not be a problem??

I would not think 13 days before you fund the account will be a problem. I don't know for certain in the case of having activated the SIM but not funded the account, but it seems like you would have at least 30 days before the account is deactivated for non-use.
(It's 30 days to activate a SIM that comes from at&t; and it's 60 days after a refill expiration. I'd be inclined to think that a non-funding of an activated SIM would fall under the latter time frame, but I don't know for sure.)

Hi all!
It seems I have the same problem ![]()
I'm travelling to US next month. I bought prepaid SIM card, activated it and... that's all ![]()
When I try to login on paygonline.com I get info that I need to change my password - and that new password was sent by SMS. But I can't reveive this SMS because my account balance is 0, and my account is empty because I can't add money and I can't add money because I can't login and I can't login because I can't receive SMS with new password and... so on! ![]()
I'd be happy if I could add money to my account and activate data package (that's why I need this SIM) - before I arrive to US. Is there any way to do this?
Also - I'll be in US after Jun 9 (so after 30 days from today) - is this mean that I can throw away my SIM card and buy new one?
I’d appreciate any help with this

Since you don't have access to your on-line GoPhone account, the only way I know to try to add funds would be to purchase a refill card from eBay, etc. and use it to refill via phone. Hopefully someone with more experience using the refill cards can clarify if that will work - I'm not certain if there is anything other than a 1-800 number on them, and I believe you may not be able to call 1-800 numbers from outside the US. (?)
Another thought is to give a "gift" of minutes to yourself. I've never tried it, but I saw someone else mention the option here recently and it looks like it may work well for situations like yours. ![]()

I have been trying to activate my sim card for about a month at the address you quote - no luck, keep getting error GP038: The activation has taken longer than normal. Please try again later.
Any other way to do this on the web?
Cheers...

If on-line activation doesn't work, the only thing I know to do is to contact customer service for assistance. It's been awhile since I've activated a SIM, but with my last two activations it required customer service to complete the process.

I finally relented and called AT&T and the real problem is that I was attempting to activte the SIM for my iPhone and apparently (although AT&T were up until recently the only provider you could use an iPhone with) it is not allowed. Have no idea why it is not allowed so if someone knows the reason I'd like to hear it... The Tech was great and activated it using a bogus IMEI number but warned me that not all iPhone features would work. Don't know any more than that. I will have to wait till I get to Chicago to see what works and what does not, but if I can just make & recieve calls I'll be happy.
Cheers.

As you are now most likely in the States by now this probably won't help, but for others wondering how to add money to their Go Phone without an on-line account & from outside the US go to the following website

I am trying to activate my new Pay As You Go card online. I am not in the US right now and would like to get my phone number to pass on to my office and friends in the US.
Why is it so difficult to get the online activation and the website to work? Slightly embarrassing for a phone company not to get the technical online functions to work... been trying for over a week now. Getting error after error messages. Guess I have to use the phone anyway and make a phone call as for 10 years ago.
at & t shape up.

Hello!
I've just come back from my US trip and want to share with you all my knowledge about AT&T magic ![]()
I've managed to activate and top up while abroad, but still I couldn't add data package or receive PIN number. To add data package you need to be in US.
1) To activate SIM card go here: https://www.wireless.att.com/GoPhoneWeb/goPhoneLan
After activation, write down phone number and first PIN (which in fact is useless).
2) To top up while abroad go here: https://www.myprepaidrefill.com/, select "Add Money/Features".
On page "New Credit/Debit Card" enter card number and provide some US address (I used my hotel address
- enter whatever. On next site you need to enter card details (with real address). It worked for me - I don't have US credit card.
3) After steps 1&2 you have working phone but you can't use it abroad (no roaming) also you can't add data package. You can use it after entering US for voice&text.
4) To add data package:
a) go to: https://www.myprepaidrefill.com/MobilityUSWeb/logi
b) call this number: 611
To login to website (a) you need PIN number. If PIN received in step (1) doesn't work or you don't remember your PIN, go here: https://www.paygonline.com/websc/index.jsp and select "Forgot your password?" - after entering phone number new PIN will be send by SMS.
Hints:
1) AT&T has some customer portal: https://www.paygonline.com/websc/index.jsp. I've used it only to change my PIN. I've never managed to login there - after fist login you need to accept terms&rules and provide personal data. There is some problem with this form (data validation checks) and I was unable to successfully enter my non-US personal data ![]()
2) AT&T offers 10, 100 and 500 MB data packages; during my 2-week trip I used my phone mainly for Google maps, tripadvisor, web & mail. I bought 500 MB & 100 MB packages. 500 MB for 25 USD is definitely best buy and allows you to focus on tourist attractions ![]()
2) To check your balance call *777# - but this way you can't check data packages (and other features like SMS packages); to do this go to this site https://www.paygonline.com/websc/index.jsp, login and select "Account Summary". Unfortunately AT&T informed me that my data package depleted only after it has depleted (!) - so it makes sense to check this site periodically.
Please remember that until you activate data package, AT&T charges data transfer using standard plan rates.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST
If you like me have Nexus phone please consider if AT&T is really best choice. AT&T uses some strange frequencies for 3G network which Nexus doesn't support. So there is no way to use 3G on Nexus in AT&T network! It is hard to believe that Google (US company) manufactures phone that doesn't work on AT&T 3G (main US telecommunication company).
Hope that helps,

Thank you for your post - hopefully it will help others who are trying to activate/refill from abroad. ![]()
Just FYI - you can check your messages and data allotment balances using the * services as well - the numbers are as follows:
*777*3# (Prepaid data allotment remaining)
*777*2# (Prepaid messages allotment remaining)
Also, while most phones manufactured today are quad-band GSM so they include at&t's frequencies, you are correct - most devices don't include all the 3G frequencies for use worldwide. To use a phone with at&t's 3G network, you need to ensure it has the 850/1900 mhz WCDMA frequencies as well as 850/1900 mhz GSM/GPRS.

I have the same Problem as other users.
In the registration progress in can`t type the @ in the confirmation email line.
Do anyone have any idea, how i can set the @ in this line? copy paste doesn`t work.
Or it is better to wait with the activation an do it in a at&t shop in manhattan?

Although it is an inconvenience to have to do so, at least imo it's the simplest way to go about it; and you'll likely spend far less time on the total effort in the long run. ![]()

That's very odd. You can type @ posting here but you can't type @ in the registration process? What's your browser setting under View>Encoding if you use IE?

Hello funkyfunk and ilikewireless,
Correct, it is not a problem with your browser. Lessons learned from our Swiss poster one page before. He said:
I also had the same problem with the @ character when I registered my two SIM cards two days ago. Although the @ on my Swiss keyboard is at the same place as on an US keyboard it did not work. Copy and paste didn't work either, so I tried the code ALT+64 that luckily worked.
So, funkyfunk, try ALT+64 (where the "6" and "4" sequence pressed with NumLock set while holding the ALT key)
It way work for you. Appears to be a bug on their UI software. Not surprised.

the Tipp with ALT 64 doesn`t work . No idea why.
but i found another way to set the @. I changed the keyboard language from German (Switzerland) in English (USA). Now it`s no problem the set the @.

Great, funkyfunk. AT&T most likely never tested the UI using foreign localizations. Now we know.
