$45 monthly unlimited
So, I just switched to this plan because I would like to use data on my phone, but I didn't realize it wouldn't work on a smartphone I don't want to move up to the $60 monthly plan and I also feel like I just wasted $45 for nothing. Is there anything I can do about this or have I just wasted my money? Also, what does it matter if I have a smartphone or a basic phone? Either way I'm using data, it shouldn't matter and this strikes me as very anti-consumer.

What matters between the two is how the phones use the data. A feature phone, or QMD uses data very differently than a smartphone, so smartphone data generally costs more becuase you use more data to do things. Other than the blackberry, I do not believe any of the other smartphones on teh market currently use data compression on the packets transferred to/from the device, so they will use more data.

But 2 GB of data on a basic phone is still the same amount as 2 GB of data on a smartphone, right?
