Are preorders for the new iPhone that are received, let's say on the first day they can be placed, Friday 14th, going to be shipped so that they arrive on or after Friday the 21st.
I preordered the 4s thinking that I would get my phone faster and not have to go stand in line and wait.
But noooo the prepordered phone arrived weeks after the release date.
Obviously from the experience, I gather that the only reasons to preorder are for reasons other than getting it as soon as possible!

My past experience was that my iPhone 4 was delivered a day early. What is unkown/not clear but I am expecting based on the past is theat delivery is on the 21st if you order early enough.

Regarding whether you get your phone on release day or not, it's all about supply and when you get your order in. Usually, you have to get your order in a few hours of the preorders starting to get it on release day because once the initial batch that are already built are spoken for, you go to backorder status.

I also am being told that my pre-order is set for shipping October 5-15. I was also told that I cannot cancel my order and go buy one in the store today eventhough the store has plenty. If I want my phone today I will have to go to the store and buy a new one and then whenever my shipment does arrive I can return it for a refund. When I asked why bother pre-ordering if it was not going to be available I was told that the stores did not know whether they would have them in stock and available on September 21.
AT&T is doing a LOUSY job of handling this release and their customer service right now is PATHETIC! I pre-ordered my iPhone 4 and picked it up in the store the day it was released. When I asked about doing that with this one I was told I couldn't do that. I also was NOT told it would take 14-21 days from September 21 for it to be shipped, and I NEVER received the e-mail they are saying I received telling me that it would be 14-21 days.

I TOO AM GOING THROUGH THE SAME SITUATION.... W.T.H IS A PRE-ORDER WHEN WE ACTUALLY GET OURS LAST.... THAT IS THE STUPIDEST THING I'VE HEARD / SEEN.... NOT ONLY THAT THEY REACTIVATED MY 2 YEAR CONTRACT... PEOPLE WHO WENT IN-STORE TO BUY THE PHONE GETS THEIRS WITHOUT ANY HASSLE.... WHAT IS A PRE-ORDER FOR.... I AM TYPING IN CAPS BECAUSE I AM ..... ATT NEEDS TO TOUCH UP ON ITS CUSTOMER SERVICE CUZ IT SUCKS... I GET BETTER SERVICE AT MCDONALDS THAN THESE JOKES ON THE PHONE....

YIPPPEEEEEEE!!! Got up 3AM Friday the 14th to preorder the iPhone 5 with AT&T for nothing. Maybe I should thank them for failing because now I will wait for Apple to launch the unlocked phones and pay full price. This will now allow me to move the rest of our business needs off ATT&T service and shop around for my business landlines, U Verse TV, Internet, and all our wireless phones sooner rather than later. My business partner is not happy as this was her upgrade and it was the only thing keeping me from being able to change our communications services.
I got a call from thier e.com dept and they have no idea, nada, as to when delivery will be made. Very disorganized or very greedy, maybe just both, who knows???
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ATT&T!!!!! for your monumental failures once again, now I can finally begin to plan diversification for our communication services.
