Cross Upgrading From a Basic Phone to a Smart Phone

My line is not eligible for an upgrade since I used my upgrade November 2011. Another line in my family plan IS eligible for an upgrade. However, that line uses a basic phone. Is it possible for me to use that upgrade to get the iPhone 5 for myself? Would there be a problem since the iPhone uses a micro-sim card? The line used for the upgrade would still be using a basic phone with a regular sim card.

I called a few AT&T stores about this and some said they would do it, and others said told me to contact a corporate store. I explained to them that I used my eligible upgrade in November, and I want to cross upgrade using a different line under the same plan that is eligible for an upgrade. My line would be a smartphone line but the line's upgrade I would be using would still be a basic phone line. I told them that I understand the iPhone uses a different sim card and I asked if I would be able to use the upgrade for me, and keep the line whose upgrade I would be using to remain a basic phone with a regular sim card. I was told that BOTH lines would have to have a data plan - and this does not seem right. Why would the basic phone line need a data plan to do a cross upgrade? How do I know if the AT&T store is a corporate store or not?

Yes it is possible to use their upgrade to get the phone for yourself, and you should be able to get the phone at the discounted price. Once you order, you need to call AT&T to switch the lines, or when you do get the phone, you can take it to the AT&T store and they should give you a NanoSim card for your iPhone 5 with your number activated on it fro free!

Well the iPhone 5 is a hot commodity right now so I think I am going to have to wait for a month or two until I can get my hands on one of them. Either way, I would rather do the cross upgrade in store instead of ordering it from online. I'm getting different information from different AT&T stores so I don't know who to believe. All I want to do is use another line's upgrade in my family plan for myself to get the iPhone 5. At the end of the day, I should be the one with smart phone and data plan, and the line used to upgrade from should still be using the basic phone with a regular SIM card and same phone number.
