Question about adding a tablet
I purchased a RCA tablet for my son, can I add this kind of tablet to my next plan or do I need to get some type of iPad?

I presume you mean add to your mobile share plan because Next is only a plan for buying a phone or tablet, not a service plan. To add a tablet to your plan, you need a tablet that is compatible with AT&T's cellular network. As far as I can tell, all of the RCA tablets are wifi only. So no, you would not be able to add it to your plan.
