There is no 4g or even 3g is this area. Has never been. Why is this then listed as a 4G area??

Would I be posting if I didn't? I just happened to take a look at the map yesterday because I was researching on where exactly HSPA+ was here in Delaware.
I have an iPhone 4 and there are other types of phones in the house as well and we are stuck on EDGE/Wi-Fi.
I'm a Super Moderator at HowardForums and have been using cell phones for a LONG LONG time...
It was just a question. If even one small area of the map can't be trusted, why should the rest of it.?
Also, what is keeping people like me from going to the press to force AT&T to be more truthful about their coverage??

I wish coverage maps are based on actual mapping, like a van going around mapping signal strength. Actual coverage mapping can be extremely expensive.
I noticed that some coverage maps have this wording, "..based on FCC License** application". If so, then a map could include equipment still under construction.
** I did not see this type of clause in the AT&T coverage map.

It appears that particular location is right on the fringe of 3G/4G coverage. Some devices might be able to get one or two bars there, but it seems EDGE would be the strongest signal based on areas not far away appearing to have reliable EDGE service. Your phones are locking onto that stronger EDGE signal.

I can turn EDGE off and I get a No Signal or Searching. So, it beyond a fringe 3G area. It's in an EDGE/GPRS/GSM area only.

first and foremost you won't pick up 4G on an iPhone, it doesn't support it. but does 3G work anywhere outside? I'm talking within a mile or 2? maps are estimates and mist of the area us 2G it looks like
Did I say aything about picking up 4G on an iPhone? (Read my post.....) I am very familiar with cell phone tech.
As of right now, AT&T uses HSPA and or HSPA+ for it's 3G/Fake 4G. Since HSPA+ areas would also support HSPA... well, it's kind of common sense.
Either way, the map is wrong and as usual, there are no answers.

Of course... (shakes head). This isn't my first rodeo and it's not the only 3G phone I have in the house. The maps are simply incorrect.

Coverage maps don't always take into account building structures, trees and multipath interference.
Well, it's a very rural area. Very few buildings and the land is flat. There are trees but mostly corn fields. ![]()

You have good points there. Try this:
You can find out how many towers are in your town, AT&T and everybody else. You can also find user ratings for wireless carriers in your town.

AT&T maps show 4G coverage throughout the Chicago area. I have not experienced 4G speeds ONCE as I have traveled, worked, and lived in this area with my Atrix 4G phone over the last four months.

I agree. ATT recently updated the coverage map for North Central Ohio. At this location in Galion, Ohio the map shows fantastic 3G coverage. However, as it turns out there isn't ANY coverage AT ALL in most parts of Galion and DEFINITELY no 3G coverage anywhere close to Galion. When I stumbled upon the changes to the coverage map a couple of weeks ago, I was intrigued. I drove most of the town a few days ago and found little if any coverage. Most parts of town don't have voice, EDGE or 3G.
According to FCC website, a new ATT tower is going up about 4-5 miles west of Galion.
Not sure if this new tower is part of some master plan that will shortly create new coverage plus 3G coverage over a large area, but if so, ATT is showing changes on the map at least serveral weeks before actural coverage is available.

I'm guessing there is coverage throughout Ohio if you stay on the interstates but there are HUGE areas of north central Ohio that do not have any coverage at all

Perhaps you will get better service in the near future. I am not sure about AT&T but I have seen coverage maps that are based on FCC approved application. That being said, FCC allows 1-3 years (varies with location) before a project goes in service.

Here's an update:
ATT has changed the coverage map and no longer shows Galion with 3g coverage. Maybe they read these forums. Anyway, still shows data coverage in this area. There isn't any data or voice coverage.

AT&T has almost no incentive to tell the truth in their coverage maps. You can get a much more truthful picture of the coverage by going to third party measurement sites, like rootmetrics.com.
