Wireless speeds plumetted last few months

It's neverending with att... I'm hoping someone can help me out here. For the past couple of months now, I have constantly been having problems on the internet. I am paying for 12 mb/s down, and as of late, can't even get past 4/5 mb/s on speedtest. That's the best it gets. I have problems streaming Pandora, watching Youtube, playing online games.

This is only a problem on wireless devices though. We have one computer plugged in with the ethernet cable, and it get 11 down every time. I used to get 11 down wirelessly, and not a thing has changed with any of my software or hardware, I just get an average of 3 mb/s down now. I'm thinking that it has to do with the router...We have 2wire3801. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated, this is incredibly frustrating.

Running a speed test with a wireless device will always give you skewed results. Also, it depends on the server load, and what server you are testing with, and what site. Especially if using Wireless-G. I find that Wireless-N gives you truer results when doing a speed test. I can also tell you that doing it with a iPhone, iPad, Android device, will always return the skewed results.

I understand all of that. I've had the same wireless adapter installed on my computer for about a year. When the internet run fine, I can test on any wireless device. This, my ipod, the laptop downstairs, the two desktops in the basement, my sisters iphone. The result is going to be just around 12 mb/s. We have never had any issues with interference, we get full bars of connectivity anywhere in the house.
The current router we have is one we got from ATT very recently, which replaced an older version that was too far away to receive a signal from att or however that works. This current router worked perfect for a few months, and now all of a sudden, not one wireless device is performing to what it should be.

If you have a windows, Mac OS computer, or Android OS device with a wifi card, download inSSIDer from metageek.net and check for conflict with other A/P's in around your residence. Once you figure what is around your residence, then you can manually set the AP for a channel like 1, 5, 11 or another, if those three are crowded. Channel 6 is usually a default channel, so you can possibly see a lot of radios at that channel.

Also make sure that the 3801 is set for 400mw, and encryption is set for both AES & TKIP, WPA/WPA2.

Or, you can do as many other AT&T U-verse subscribers have done and turn off the wireless feature of the 2WIRE RG and purchase your own wireless access point.

You really do not need to turn it off, if you add an access point. I keep the wifi radio on on our RG, due to I get farther range with it, than I do with both of our Wireless-N Access Points.

You just need to make sure you set everything on different channels.

Gregzoll I've actually looked into that, but wasn't entirely sure what to make of it. There are 4 total devices that are on channel 6 (the one im on, including me) out of the 14 or so around me. Is 4 people on the same channel enough to be making me lose this speed?

Yes it can. Try changing the channel on your wifi and see if it improves performance.

Set for Channel 1, 5 or 11 if no one on any of those channels.

If anything changing the channel has made it worse I was getting speeds less then 1 mb/s -_-

Anyone know what the MTU should be set to?

Edit: On a sidenote, as I was switching channels, I actually noticed one network kept changing their number as I went on the same channel as them. What are the chances they'd be changing the same time as me?

The MTU should be 1500. As for the other network changing when you changed yours, can you post a screenshot? Manually set the channel in the gateway if you have one. It may just be a "ghost" that you are seeing.

Also, post screenshots from UVerse Realtime, the IP/Profile, error table, bitloading tabs.

I'll work on getting those other screen shots. As for Uverse real time, I've actually tried downloading/installing it before. But when I get to the part where it installs win pcap or whatever, it says a previous installation is on and in use, and shuts down. Any ideas how I can completely remove wpcap or shut down the processes?

Look for it in Programs. Also what Operating System are you using? Here is the FAQ info on WinPCap http://www.winpcap.org/misc/faq.htm Antivirus/Antimalware can cause this issue.

I'm running Windows 7. I've tried everything in that faq over and over, and still haven't found anything. Only thing I can think of is to search through the registry, but not sure how to go about doing that. Still trying

As for going theough the registry, unless you have made a backup first of it, you can screw things up if you are not carefull.

Try the following:

- Restart in safe mode.
- Once you're up and running in safe mode, see if the following files are on your system:

C:\Windows\System32\packet.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wpcap.dll
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\npf.sys

If you find any of these files, move them to a temporary folder, like:

C:\WinPCap-Old\

- Restart the computer in normal mode.
- Download WinPCap v4.1.2 installer for Windows from here:

https://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm

- Run it and install it, then reboot.
- After the reboot, attempt to install UV Realtime again.

Tried everything you said Joe, still nothing

It's gotta be a registry issue..I've tried so long and so many things looking for this.
Could another way to go about this is just shut down the programs or whatever that is 'using' winpcap? Then I can try reinstalling winpcap?

You could try CCLeaner, or even MBAM, to see if they can find the errant keys sitting out there.

What happens if you just run the WinPCap 4.1.2 installer? If you actually have a previous version on the system, it will launch the remover for that version, which will proceed, then it will launch the installer for the new version.

What error message do you get and/or what happens?

Try doing a run as Administrator, by right clicking on the .exe and choose "Run as administrator".
