What email service will I be getting?

When I get U-verse installed in the near future, what type of email service will I have? Will I be able to use my standard POP email client (Thunderbird), or have they gone all web-based now? Will it be myname@att.net, or a different domain?

I've been looking at the messages here and see a lot of people with problems related to POP email access, which is why I'm asking. It may actually be moot since I recently set up a new POP mailbox on the web hosting service that I use and may not use the ATT mail for anything at all. I long ago started using a forwarding email address for my personal email so that whenever I change ISPs I can just redirect that address instead of having to inform everybody the address change.

You will receive an att.net email address.  You will have the opportunity to select the name that you wish to use.  The email service is provided by Yahoo, and you will be able to access your email account on the internet.  You can also set up your email account in an email client such as Outlook or Thunderbird.

Also, you can forward the att.net account to another email account, it you do not wish to use the email account provided by AT&T.

Essentially it's a Yahoo account. I try to recommend that everyone should separate their e-mail service from their ISP. A good e-mail service ranges from free to under $20/year.  It makes it much easier to change ISPs.

I echo Don Newcomb's reply.  AT&T is having big problems with their e-mail servers and are apparently instructed not to admit liability.  Many of their servers are apparently losing logins.

I recommend you get a gmail mail account and don't under any circumstances use your AT&T e-mail address.  Caveat emptor.

I already set up a new POP3 email account with the company that hosts my web sites and have redirected my personal email address to that account.
