The blue HD light on the STB remains "on" at all times, even when the box is turned off. Is this normal as I do not remember this happening before last week? It is really annoying during the night as it is very bright in a dark room.

There are several threads going on about this already. It was a software update that caused this. Most, including me, have cut a small piece of electrical tape and placed it over the light so it doesn't shiine thru.

Do you think I can put the "box with the rotating wheel in front of the blue light"... behind my aluminum Christmas tree????
Considering the fact that the rotating wheel is a minature one, the light affect might be good for just one or two branches, but you never know.

I have had the same problem and spent about the same amount of time on the phone with ATT as you. I could care less about the light staying on, but we do dvr some shows in SD because not every TV in our house has HD. Before the update I could watch those shows in our family room by simply changing the input selection on my TV, The aspect ration would then be correct for SD, change it back and I was set for HD. Now they are telling me that I need to change the ratio everytime or zoom for SD

Why is it necessary to change the input on the TV to watch a channel in SD versus HD?

I got an update from our U-verse TV folks this morning:
"We are aware of this issue – which will be corrected by an upcoming software update. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
Or - as we've all heard on the phone before - "Please continue to hold."

Perhaps the next time U-Verse runs any special promotions, they can call them Blue Light Specials.

Some people (like my dad for some reason) like to have all of their SD TV shows fit the entire widescreen tv. U-Verse doesn't really offer that as an option for SD channels when watching in HD.

If you set the ZOOM menu to Stretch, the SD channels will be stretched to fill the screen when the Aspect Ratio is set to either 720p or 1080i

True, but strech mode crops some of the picture out and my parents notice it.
Personally I'd rather have the black bars on the side of the image.

Cute answer about using tape to cover the blue light. Are you going to pay my electric bill ? AT&T should fix the darn problem.

You registered over two years ago for this forum to make this your first post? I do not know how much it costs in electricity to run a STB, but I am sure the cost of the blue light being on is negligible. If you are that unhappy, call customer service, and ask for a refund of a penny a month for the blue light.

Act now and receive U-verse Sticky Block half off for your gateway too if you don't want your own personal lightshow! Make a move and U tape it up.

That blue light probably costs less in a year than it cost you to turn your computer on and post that silly statement.

0.25 watt * 1 KW/1000 watts * 14 ¢/KW-hr * 24 hr/day * 365 days/yr =
31 ¢ to run the blue LED for the year.

SomeJoe: According to your calculations, the blue LED is costing the original poster .026 cents a month. That does not include the time that he is watching his television, and the blue LED would be on anyway so I am taking .005 cents away from his monthly total. The result is that AT&T needs to refund .021cents a month to the orginal poster. That would be the fair way of doing it.

It's costing him 2.6 ¢ per month, or $0.026 (0.026 dollars) per month. NOT 0.026 ¢, that's a completely different value. Be careful on your dollars and cents, otherwise you look like these Verizon reps:

I meant what you said. I just messed up my decimal point, and wrote it like you would in dollars such as $.026 for 2.6 cents. The original poster should receive a monthly refund of 2.1 cents after subracting the time the blue LED would normally be on for watching television.

Obviously, the point is that the electrical demand induced by the software's change in blue light behavior amounts to very little.
So, what did we learn today?
- LEDs don't use enough electricity to worry about.
- You do not need to be able to do any math to work for Verizon.

Back to the Verizon math fail, I wonder if that ever got resolved? I googled it and I believe that they meant to say that he was charged 2 cents per Kb but they added an extra zero and changed from dollars to cents at some point.
