We just had U-verse installed. I have an older receiver Yamaha RX-V1400. It worked with our Comcast. I am not getting the Dolby surround sound on any of our HD channels. If we are watching a DVD it is fine.
I do not have any home theater hook up savvy.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

From there as long as you are connected via HDMI or Optical, you will have Surround sound, as long as you have your AV Receiver set for Dolby Digital Surround.
Keep in mind, some channels will not be in Surround, even though they may be in the HD channels, and will just be in Stereo. Same for some programming.
"Ren: Now listen, Cadet. I've got a job for you. See this button? Don't touch it! It's the History Eraser button, you fool!
Stimpy: So what'll happen?
Ren: That's just it. We don't know. Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?"

I had the same problem with my JVC receiver. No surroundsound only stereo. What I did, at the suggestion from someone on the site, was connect a pair of red and white cables from the audio out jacks of the set top box to the audio in on the tv. I then connected an optical cable from the audio out of the set top box to the audio input of the surroundsound receiver.
When I want surroundsound I just turn on the sourround receiver and turn down the volume of the tv

You need to press Menu for the Set top box or DVR Menu, then arrow over to Options, then down to Audio/Language Options, press OK, then arrow down to Digital Audio Output, press Ok, then choose Surround, Save, exit.
Thanks so much -- this worked. You are awesome!
