SportsNet New York HD (channel 1704) has been added to the HD Premium Tier Package. I now see the SD channel, SportsNet New York (channel 704), with the message You are not subscribed to this channel.
This is great for those who have been asking for the HD version of this channel.

I also noticed that Yes HD (Ch. 1702) also seems to be part of HD Premium now? I do NOT subscribe to the Sports Package - the SD Channel (702) has the non-subscribed blue screen.

Yes, it looks like both YES Network and SNY have been removed from the Sports Package, and the HD versions (channel 1702 and channel 1704) are now part of the HD Premium Tier Package.

Actually, the move makes perfect sense. I have always considered YES Network and SNY as regional sports channels (RSN's). I didn't understand why the HD versions were not moved into the HD Premium Tier along with all the other RSN's back in December 2010,

Other than the out of market RSN's, the NFL Red Zone Channel and the World Fishing Network, no sports channels are included in the HD Premium Tier Package. The professional games are blacked out on the out of market RSN's, and the NFL Red Zone Channel is only broadcast on Sunday afternoons during the NFL regular season.
The overwhelming majority of the sports channels are either in a base package or the Sports Package. Those in the Sports Package want to be moved to a base package as was recently done with the Tennis Channel being moved to the U300 package. The sports channels want to be included in a base package (i.e. U200, U300, U450, etc.) so that they can receive a higher carriage fee since the fees are paid on a per subscriber basis.
Thus, it's not that U-verse wants to kill off the Sports Package as it is that the sports channels don't want to be on a "sports tier". It would actually be easier and less expensive for U-verse to place a channel in the Sports Package than it would be to place that same channel on a base package.

I spoke to Customer Service today and was told that since there is now a charge for the YES Network that the Yankee games will not be blacked out for my area which is Ohio. I asked for that in writing, but they were not able to provide me anything other than to say that the games would be shown. Can anyone confirm that is the case and if I subscribe to this package and receive the YES Network that I will be able to view the Yankee games?

You were given incorrect information. Per MLB rules, games broadcast on the RSN's outside of a team's home terroitory will be subject to blackout. Ohio is not in the Yankee's home territory.

Obviously the CSR you talked to had no clue how professional sports programming works. The only sports that do not blackout out of area games are the NFL, they black out home team games if the game is not a sellout. Just ask Jacksonville, Fl how many Jags games were broadcast this year. 1, their home opener.
All other major league sports black out out of area games unless you have:
MLB Extra Innings
NBA League Pass
NHL Center Ice
MLS Direct Kick
