Just brought home the TV listed above and found that we cannot get surround sound via HDMI. I see that this is a long-standing problem for Sharp Aquos TV's. I should not have to revert to Stereo sound on a brand new TV. We have an 8-yr old STB - Motorola 1200, and support says they don't have anything newer. I asked about the Motorola 2250, but was told that is a DVR, and they don't have any new upgrades for non-DVR.
Does anyone have any solutions?

Most TVs do not have surround sound. Your solution is to get a Home Theater unit. Maybe a Zevox??

We just got a LC-52LE640U and I'm not sure what the difference between the 2 sets are except for size.
Ours does have a Surround Sound option and it works fine via HDMI with the difference being that it is hooked up to the DVR and not a STB.
I would suggest that the OP do a reset of the box with the TV on to see if that helps.

Almost all TV's will only be stereo with some form of sound enhancement so HDMI sees this as stereo if you want true 5.1 it will require an AVR and speakers/sub.

ITA that the only way to get TRUE surround sound is with an auxillary system and speakers.
I'm not sure what the OPs original problem or question is.

We recently set up a Sharp Aquos LC-60C6400U TV. We could not get surround sound to work when the Motorola STB 1200 was connected, so we installed an AV Receiver, Pioneer VSX-522-K. It is set up with HDMI from the STB to the receiver and HDMI from the receiver to the TV using HDMI with ARC channel.
With this set up, we now have great digital sound and video on all HD channels. The problem is there is no sound at all for any SD channels or any recordings done in SD. I have tried every setting I could find on the TV, Receiver, and STB with no luck. I have also tried adding RCA audio from STB to receiver and STB direct to TV all with no luck. The only thing I havent tried is adding a digiital audio cable, mainly because I don't have one available.
Any suggestions?

Forgot to add, even though the sound is working on all HD channels, there are some where the audio is intermittently choppy
