I'm not well versed in this stuff. The tech who did some work at my house yesterday changed some settings on my television and additionally the aspect ratio on the uverse STB. Now, when watching HD channels I have the black bands on either side of the picture and on my Toshiba TV when I select the pic size I am now unable to select "Full" which is what I believe I want. I can't get the picture to fill the screen properly. This is a Toshiba 40" LCD 1080p TV. I'm just trying to figure out how to get my "full" picture size setting back.
Even if it's not the proper size, it shouldn't be "greyed out". I also don't like that the tech messed with my TV settings and didn't tell me what he did. I've tried to remedy this via my TV's menu to no avail. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. I really don't want to set another appointment to have this partcular tech come back to the house and show me what he did/ fix the issue that wasn't there prior to his visit.

First of all, make sure that all of your HD channels have the black bars on all of their programs, rather than just being for the ones that were made in 4:3 ratio.
Assuming all of them are this way, are you getting black bars along the top and bottom as well, or just the sides?
Also, on that TV's STB, select Menu (on the remote), then use right-arrow to get to Options, then select System Options, then Aspect Ratio. Which of the four options (4:3 SD, Widescreen SD, 720p, 1080i) is selected? It should be one of the bottom two.

I'm mostly curious about why all of the sudden I am unable to select one of the aspect choices on my Toshiba. It seems odd since it worked prior to the tech messing with it. Also, it seems as if certain channels now have the black bars that didn't previously.

Can you tell us why the tech was at your house?

How is the STB connected to the TV? It must be component or HDMI.
Slim possibility that the HDMI is signaling the TV that it cannot be full.
Is it possible the tech left it connected composite (yellow RCA) or coax?

My wife switched the account into her name due to our upcoming divorce. Customer service incorrectly set up a new service order instead of a move order and service was disconnected at the house (my account). After several unsuccessful hours on the phone with tier 2, a tech was the only solution. He was forced to replace all STB's and the RG due to a whole new account being created for my wife and the installed equipment belonging to my now cancelled account. It was a real cluster that I had to "pay" for with my time because customer service clicked the wrong button. Or whatever the case was. Having a tech to the house and replacing all my equipment was redundant and unneccessary in my eyes.

I'll double check but I have it set up for HDMI. I don't believe I have any composite cables back there and due to my cable management, he just used the existing cabling/power with the new wireless STB.

I might have an idea why.
The STB is set to 1080i, so it is outputting a widescreen picture, even for a 4:3 program.
According to the online manual for your TV, "Full" is available only for a 480p or 480i widescreen signal.
Try changing the STB output to widescreen 480, and see if the "full" option returns on your TV.

I thought I would look it up, too. I did not see anything about a full setting. Picture sizing is described on pages 39-40. It appears you need a Native setting. Check iy out - http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/js
