April Carriage Agreements Notice

Below is the latest notice of carriage agreements expiring found in the link below.  Once again, I'm posting this strictly as informative.  It is not intended to stimulate discussion or speculation.

 April 17, 2012

April 2012:

While we previously announced a possible change, AT&T and the programmer for the following channels agreed to a temporary extension that is now set to expire in April 2012 and, if a reasonable longer term agreement cannot be reached with the programmer, we may lose the rights to carry the following channels (listed in alphabetical order) on U-verse TV in April 2012: Estrella (channel 3024), HD Net (channel 1105 in HD), HRTV (channel 672), New England Sports Network (NESN) (channel 712/713 and 1712/1713 in HD), and Wealth TV (channel 470 and 1470 in HD). In addition, in the San Diego, CA market area, an impacted local channel is KUSI (channel 9 and 1009 in HD).

May 2012:

While we previously announced a possible change, AT&T and the programmer for the following channels agreed to a temporary extension that is now set to expire in May 2012 and, if a reasonable longer term agreement cannot be reached with the programmer, we may lose the rights to carry the following channels (listed in alphabetical order) on U-verse TV in May 2012: ION, ROOT Sports Northwest (channel 1764), ROOT Sports Pittsburgh (channel 1730), ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain (Channel 1760), and Zee TV (channel 3702).

AT&T's contracts with programmers for the content displayed on our U-verse TV service periodically expire, but are usually re-negotiated or extended with no interruption or change for our U-verse members. Contract(s) for the programming listed below are set to expire as indicated, and AT&T is making every effort to reach a fair agreement to continue carriage. However, if a reasonable agreement cannot be reached with such programmer(s), we will no longer have the rights to carry their programming on U-verse TV. While the programming listed below will continue to be available to U-verse members so long as AT&T has the rights to carry it, if a reasonable agreement cannot be reached with the programmer the programming will no longer be available at that time.

June 2012:

The impacted national channels (in alphabetical order) are AMC (channel 795 and 1795 in HD), AMC – West (channel 796), CBS Sports Network (channel 643 and 1643 in HD), Cinelatino (channel 3126), Daystar (channel 563), HITN (channel 3055), IFC (channel 797), Multimedios (channel 3065), WE (channel 372), and WE - West (channel 373).

In addition the impacted local channels are:

(1) For California, in the Los Angeles area, KCAL (channel 9 and 1009 in HD) and KCBS (channel 2 and 1002 in HD); in the Sacramento area, KMAX (channel 31 and 1031 in HD) and KOVR (channel 13 and 1013 in HD); and in the San Francisco area, KBCW (channel 44 and 1044 in HD) and KPIX (channel 5 and 1005 in HD);

(2) For Connecticut, in the Hartford area, WCBS (channel 12 and 1012 in HD);

(3) For Florida, in the Miami area, WBFS (channel 33 and 1033 in HD) and WFOR (channel 4 and 1004 in HD); and in the West Palm Beach area, WFOR (channel 3 and 1003 in HD);

(4) For Georgia, in the Atlanta area, WUPA (channel 69 and 1069 in HD);

(5) For Illinois, in the Chicago area, WBBM (channel 2 and 1002 in HD);

(6) For Michigan, in the Detroit area, JTV (channel 5380), WKBD (channel 50 and 1050 in HD) and WWJ (channel 62 and 1062 in HD);

(7) For New York, in the New York City area, WCBS (channel 2 and 1002 in HD);

(8) For Texas, in the Dallas area, KTVT (channel 11 and 1011 in HD) and KTXA (channel 21 and 1021 in HD).

Also in June WGN American (channel 180 and 1180 in HD) will be removed from our channel line- mup in the Bakersfield and Monterey, CA; Reno, NV; Charleston, SC and El Paso, TX market areas.  In addition, HDnet Alternate (channel 1107) will be removed from our channel line-up in the Lubbock and Dallas, TX market areas.

AT&T Reached Agreement with AMC Networks

AT&T has reached a fair distribution agreement with AMC Networks for AMC, IFC, Sundance and WE tv. The deal was reached on Sunday, July 1, and will keep AMC Networks available on U-verse TV. Details of the agreement were not disclosed. AT&T provided the following update:

"It was important to us on behalf of our U-verse TV customers to come to a positive resolution as quickly as possible. We appreciate everyone’s willingness to make that happen, working diligently over the weekend, so customers can continue to enjoy the programming they love on U-verse, the fastest growing TV service in the country," said Jeff Weber, President of Content and Advertising Sales, AT&T.

only one that remotely effects us is CBS11 and TXA21,  don't see that being an issue though.

 I find it interesting that WGN America will be removed in only a few selected areas. Is there a specific reason for that? What is HDNet Alternate? In St. Louis we have HDNet on 1105.

In Dallas, we have that alternate channel because HDNet used to broadcast some Dallas Mavericks basketball games in our market.  One channel would carry the Mavericks game while the other channel would carry the normal HDNet programming.

June 2012: In addition the impacted local channels are:

- For Connecticut, in the Hartford area, WCBS (channel 12 and 1012 in HD);

- For New York, in the New York City area, WCBS (channel 2 and 1002 in HD);

The above is an interesting press release:

- WCBS isn't carried in the Hartford area at all.  It's only carried in New Haven and Litchfield counties in the New Haven-Hartford market.  It's NOT offered in Hartford, Middlese, New London, Tolland, or Windham counties of the market.

- AT&T doesn't service New York at all, Verizon is the state-wide telco and FiOs is their equivalent of Uverse.  I venture to guess they're referring to the Fairfield County area of Connecticut (not NY) which is in the New York City market.

I wonder if WCBS will use the carriage renewal agreement to get WLNY-55 on the line-up in Fairfield and New Haven counties.  They recently purchased this station out of Long Island and will run it as a duopoly.  They already got the station added on Time Warner and Cablevision franchises in the area.  In fact, during the 90s, WLNY (then WLIG) was offered on SNET Americast, our (and I say this very loosely) "predecessor" of AT&T Uverse, in Fairfield and New Haven counties.  To get WLNY back would be ironic!

When we first got U-Verse, we got the New York locals, but then they went away for us.  Sucked, because if what I like to watch is not on our local station for whatever reason, I was often able to catch it on the New York affiliate.

So the agreement with HD Net was only temporary and we may still lose the channel at the end of April?  That sucks.

It also sucks we may lose the CBS stations in June.  I watch CBS for both local and network news.  I also watch David Letterman and Craig Ferguson and just became a regular watcher of "NYC 22".

Don't even worry about the CBS local, it's just a normal re-up negotiation. :smileywink:

If AT&T drops AMC, I drop AT&T. Breaking Bad is the best show on tv. And AMC is the best network on tv.

If at&t is willing to lose AMC, WEtv and IFC, then they are willing to lose customers.  I will definitely switch to Comcast.  Fortunately, AMC is not starting the new summer season until the middle of July.  Now I have time to watch/clear my DVR if necessary.  Happy with at&t.  But will be happiest watching my AMC shows!!

At&t is willing to lose quality programming?

I posted that article on the forum back in September.  It didn't seem to get much attention at the time, but I was afraid something like this would unfold when the current carriage deal expired.  I didn't realize that it would be so soon.

The fact that both Dish and AT&T are having an issue with AMC speaks volumes.  Of course AMC is painting the picture that those TV providers are the bad guys who are trying to deprive the customers of their favorites shows.

Below is another article on the dispute with AMC.  I feel like I have taken a time capsule back to July 2010:

AT&T says AMC Networks is seeking an "excessive rate increase" from the telco to keep AMC, IFC and WeTV on U-verse TV, with the current carriage deal set to expire at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on June 30.

Separately, Dish Network has threatened to drop AMC's networks on June 30, also citing the programmer's demands for higher fees.

AT&T said in a statement, "We are making every effort to reach a fair agreement and continue providing these channels to our customers... We've been in ongoing negotiations to renew this agreement, but AMC Networks is seeking an excessive rate increase in our overall fees for the right to deliver these channels."

In a statement Thursday, AMC said, "We are disappointed that, just days before the July 15 season premiere of AMC's Breaking Bad, we have not yet reached an agreement with AT&T that adequately reflects the popularity of our programming and AMC's position as a top tier network with acclaimed shows like The Walking Dead, basic cable's highest-rated scripted drama series."

AMC added that the standoff with AT&T is separate from the situation with Dish, "which has threatened to drop AMC Networks in retaliation for an unrelated lawsuit between the two companies." The programmer was referencing the ongoing legal battle over defunct programming network Voom HD, in which Dish was found to have acted in bad faith in terminating its deal to carry the Voom channels.

According to AT&T, AMC is asking that the telco pay nearly double what it believes other pay-TV operators do, including a smaller-size competitor. "We believe the rates they are seeking are disproportionate compared to the viewership we see across their channels," AT&T said. "We don't think that's reasonable, especially in these economic times, and we will continue to work toward a fair deal."

AMC and AT&T had a carriage spat two years ago, when the programmer was the Rainbow Media Holdings division of Cablevision Systems. That deal expired July 1, 2010, and the two sides reached an agreement on July 15 with no disruption to U-verse TV subscribers.

AT&T has set up a website with more information on its side of the dispute at att.com/fighting4you.

This exact same thing happened 2 years ago, and is a typical negotiation tactic for networks.  They blame the cable companies, and the cable companies blame the networks.  In the end an agreement is made because neither want to lose viewers, it's just a tool for the network to come back to the broadcaster and say see.. this many people will drop your company if you dont keep us on your line up.  here is the statement from 2010.

Where's all the hysteria by the OPWs?????  A carriage dispute would not be complete without that!  Give them time, I suppose.  They're probably registering their usernames as we speak.

Before everyone Start to Blaming ATT for dropping AMC/IFC and We. Dish has already dropped AMC's sibling channel Sundance and has declared its intention to drop AMC, along with two of its other sibling channels, IFC and WE tv, on Saturday. And Don't go crying to Comcast Because they already raise their rates for the Bay Area in June. And will, Raise their rates for the rest usa by the end of the year.
