Phone and DSL dead for 2 days

Our phone and internet stopped working 2 days ago. The phone says no line and the DSL gives the "Could not connect to ATM circuit" error. I plugged in 4 different phones into the telephone jack to make sure it was not the a bad phone. I live in a midrise and found out from our security that AT&T tech were working on the telephone closet 

1/2 hour before my line went dead. I tracked them down and requested them to look into my problem but they wouldn't and asked me to call support instead. The support call made do all the debugging steps for 30 mins and 

50 mins later I got to a human being. This lady was very rude and said that they can someone to my place next week (5 days later) and it might cost me $71 to fix it.

are you kidding me???? I've lived and worked in third world countries and have seen better service than this. What if I only had a phone line and no cell at home and there was an emergency?? this has already caused me a lot of losses in revenue.

I feel for you since my phone/dsl was out for four days in my mobile home park. One of the problms is that the present state of customer sevice at ATT is so bad. They are only given boilerplate answers to work with and they are thousands of miles away in India or someplace so they have no clue as to what your service problem really is. In addition, they seem to feel that everyone of ther customers can live with out POTS (plain old telephone service) or DSL for several days, thanks to cellphones etc.

In my case, they could not determine the problem and would send a tech out in 7 days to fix it. If they had only read my local newspaper, they would have discovered that my outage was caused by storm damage, not just some random line outage. I mysteriously had my POTS/DSL back in four rather than seven days as a result.

I guess my situaltion was not as bad as yours. I atleast had coffee w/ wifi shops nearby. The guy from AT&T came in today and fixed the problem in a hour. What happenned was that my phone line was disconnected by another AT&T guy when he was installing U-Verse for a new customer. The guy who fixed my problem was very competent and even gave me his direct cell number in case this happens again.
