1. login using your AT&T email ID at att.yahoo.com/mail website.
2. click on OPTIONS (upper-right corner) --> MAIL OPTIONS --> select ACCOUNTS.
3. then add the email address you're having problems with
4. a confirmation code will be sent to your email account to complete the process.

FIX ERROR 553, VERIFYING NON-ATT EMAIL ID

Thank you for this. I just updated to Windows 7, my favorite Outlook Express is no longer supported, and I was VERY frustrated trying to set up Thunderbird to use a number of email accounts, many of which are NOT AT&T accounts. With SMTP filtering being what it is, this probably saved a few nasty-grams to AT&T customer support.

These directions no longer work. The software has changed; the screenshots are different from what is seen. Attempts to get AT&T tech support to help with this fail. Someone needs to look into this.

Thank you very much indeed for posting Email Verification steps. ATT tech staff (Maria and Jennifer) were unable to tell me anything about the subject but insisted to transfer me to paid support. I refused.
The solution is very simple, thanks to you, but they must have wanted me to use the paid support to share the commission.
I wonder how many easy solutions there are on the web (ATT Help) and otherwise that takes minutes which otherwise takes a very long time of arguing and discussions with inefficient, slightful or ignorant Tech Support staff.

And, by the way, gmail is a snap - there is no excuse.
So, does anyone have any suggestions?
