Texting Overseas...

Okay so my boyfriend is currently overseas and he took his US at&t cell phone overseas with him. The cell phone works where he is right now so he texted me but I was wondering how much it is going to cost each of us for every text we send to each other. Is it the .50 cents for him to send to me and .25 cents for me to send to him? Am I going to be charged to receive the text message he sends even though it is a US phone to another US phone that is not in the United States? Also how much would it cost him to call me or me to call him per minute? Is it the 2.49 that is used for international calls?

Thanks for your help!

For you:

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/messaging-internet/messaging/international.jsp

It’s just $0.25 to send a message from the U.S. to international numbers. Receiving a message from outside the U.S. is just $0.20, or deducted from your Messaging Package or data package allowance.

For him:

Question:
What is the pricing for using text messaging while roaming?

How much does it cost to send a text message while roaming internationally?

Answer:
There are no additional charges for sending and receiving text messaging while roaming in the United States. If roaming internationally (where available), text messages sent are $0.50 each and do not pull from message buckets. Text messages received while roaming internationally are billed at normal rate.

For you to call him that will depend on where he is:

Correction: as long as the boyfriend is using his AT&T cell abroad nothing changes for the OP, there are no additional charges to send/receive messages and make/receive calls to that number, that would only apply if he were using a local number — but then the AT&T roaming rates would not apply to him.

Wait let me see if I understand this correctly... If he sent me a text message I wouldn't be charged extra to receive it or to send one back to him? Is that what your saying? As long as he is using his us at&t cell phone with a US number? Same thing with the calling he would just have to pay roaming and I wouldn't have to pay anything extra to get the call? And the rates wouldn't be different if I called him, it would be the same as if he was in the United States? Did I understand what you meant?

Sorry I just want to make sure I understand what your saying.... Thanks for the quick reply!

Yes, so long as he is using his at&t SIM even though he is out of the country all of your charges for calling, texting, MMS, etc. will be the same as if he were next door. 🙂

He is the only one who will incur additional charges - $0.50 for each SMS he sends/receives, $1.30 for each MMS, and the international roaming rate for calling based on the country he is visiting.

Incoming SMS/MMS don't cost anything extra even for the person who's roaming, only outgoing 😉

That's correct — to you it would cost the same (should be free as it's an M2M call). He'll be subject to paying roaming charges, so take it easy on him 😉
