LG A340 can't access att.net email contact list during daytime

I have two LG A340 phones with unlimited data plans. All works fine except when accessing att.net email our contact lists are only accessible at night. After about eight AM when I click Contacts, it comes back with "Sorry, there was a problem accessing your Contacts. Please try again." It will not work again until sometime the next night. This is very consistent and is the same on both phones. AT&T phone tech support was no help. They simply said the phones evidently don't support accessing the contact list, which of course is wrong because they can access the contact list at night. I have good signal strength 24 hours a day and everything else is always accessible including my email.
