1. It sounds like it's randomly dropping you all the time - is this true? there's no pattern, nothing like that?
2. Let's have some fun and experiment. Everyday, try accessing the wi-fi from a different point in your home. Try sitting it as close to the modem as you can. Then everyday, move it a little bit farther from your modem. Note when you start losing connectivity.
3. Now that you've done that, let's configure your 2wire.
Configuring your 2wire DSL/Wi-Fi Modem:
1. In your web browser, access the modem via it's IP Address of '192.168.1.254'
2. On the Network at a Glance screen, pick the icon 'Home Network' at the top.
3. Above where it says View Network Summary, you should see the link for 'Wireless Settings' .
4. If it asks you for your system password, this is your modem-specific password... if you've forgotten what it is, there is an option that says 'I've Forgotten My Password' and it'll give you a hint or assist you in resetting the password.
5. On the wireless settings screen, scroll down to where it says Additional Settings. Look for the 'Power Level'. It should be set to 4.
6. Try adjusting that power level to 10 and check the wifi again.
Please note that wifi will work, however, things like electromagnetic interference and such can interfere with the connectivity. This is just one way to help resolve this. Let me know what happens!

Or I have to manually say go to 2WIRE - takes a few sec's and I am back on! I have it set for windows to manage WiFi - going to try one more time get it working full time - then I will return it back to AT&T - AT&T wants $$$ to see what is happening $90 + an Hour I should be so lucky lmao SO as I say NOW time will tell is this just junk or is it going to work? Thanks for your help......... **Note** If I use wifi out in the stores or airports or starbucks it's A OK!

Try adjusting the power level like I said inside of the modem. If that's still not working, you may just need a new router.

hi photo156!
what is the model of your 2Wire device? most 2wires have at least 100-150ft (open football field) wireless range. per floor level/rooms that your computer is away from the 2wire, the range decreases by at least 10 ft.
have you tried adjusting the 2Wire's wireless channel? you can play with the wireless channels and see which one works best. also, make sure that your 2wire and wireless computer are at least 3-5 ft. away from other wireless devices (cellphones, cordless phones, etc.), lead materials, etc.

you may also try resetting the 2Wire device to factory state to clear any possible wireless errors.
hope this helps! ![]()

if you have to reboot the laptop to "regain connection" or tell the laptop to "find the 2wire" again, that's a laptop problem, not a 2wire problem. Probably a bad driver, might check your manufacturer to see if they have any updates. My sister has this problem with her Vista Home premium laptop all the time. it just "decides" to go off line. I did some digging around and testing one night and found out that sony put out an updated laptop wireless NIC driver for it. Applied the updated driver and the problem went away.

I am at MAX power 10 - I am only in the next room = 10ft away - wall is dry wall - I changed channels - Does not matter if I am next to the wifi or in some other room it just shuts down! Some times comes back on it's own but most of the time I have to reboot or tell it to find 2wire - Still doing what i has done from day one - works when it wonts to! -

hi nbrskn!
yes, the 2.4MHz cordless phones create an interference with the 2Wire's wireless signal.
for more info, you can check this link:

I am having this same problem.
Changed the Channels that doesn't help.
I upped the power to 10 still does it.
Did a Bandwidth test and that is fine.
The wireles just keeps dropping and it is annoying.

Might check and make sure your wireless card drivers are up to date, and functioning correctly. I have seen it on more than one occasion where the 2wire (or insert other wireless router here) was fine, but the drivers for the wireless Network card were defective. driveragent.com identified that issue with me once with a stubborn HP laptop. The HP driver was just garbage but found a comparable one (matching the hardware) and it's rock solid.
Another utility that can help is "speccy" (pronounced: spek-ky) it's a piriform application (same people who make ccleaner).
Another tip- check other wireless channels. You can do that via a utility called "netstumbler". Pick a channel that everyone else is not on.

I have this problem but it isn't a wifi problem. It is a dsl/ internet connection problem. This is an intermittent problem that occurs in bunches. I can go weeks with no problems and then WHAM! we have a number of days where we have to reboot the modem by turning it off and on. Frequently that works on the first time, but just as frequently it takes 2-3 reboots to recapture the connection. I am using this connection to work from home so I am getting close to moving to a different provider.

Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- Cordless phones and other electronic devices are the most common cause of intermittent Internet connectivity issues. Cordless phone systems running at 2.4 GHz often run at the same frequency as your DSL modem or home networking router. If you are experiencing intermittent connectivity issues, you may need to replace your cordless phone with one that runs at a different frequency.
- Large metal objects and electrical equipment such as televisions, home entertainment electronics, and microwaves can also cause interference. Try to keep your DSL modem and wireless home networking router away from these sources of electronic interference.
- Your phone jack may be defective or damaged. Try connecting the modem to a different phone jack, if possible. If the hiss and background noise is gone, the initial phone jack is defective and should be replaced.Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- The RJ-11 phone cord that connects your modem to the phone jack may be damaged and need replacing. If your phone cord is over 14 feet long, the signal may be weakened sufficiently that it is intermittently lost.Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- DSL filters are needed on all phone devices except the DSL modem. If you have more than one phone line entering your home, DSL filters should also be installed on the second line, even if it is not connected to your DSL equipment.
- Phone ringing disconnects DSL service If your DSL service is disconnecting when your phone rings, you probably have a phone somewhere in the house/office that doesn't have a DSL filter installed between the phone and the wall jack. Sporadic or intermittent loss of you connection to the Internet is often caused by electronic or physical interference. If your Internet connection is coming and going, you may want to check the following things:
- The inside phone wiring in your home may also cause intermittent loss of the DSL signal. Shorts, grounds, poor line quality, etc. can degrade the DSL signal.
If the issue persist, it is recommended that you contact the AT&T voice helpdesk at 1-877-722-3755 (open 24/7) and troubleshoot according to their recommendation, if require they will run a line test on your AT&T DSL line.

The problem is a different provider might not be your solution and the only thing it might add is more frustration to your problem. Wireless issues are tricky mainly because of the word "Wireless"
If it's truly not a WI-FI problem, then I would get a wired cord and plug it into the back of the 2wire (in one of the ports 1-4) and put one to your computer. Disable your wireless card and retest. If you keep your connection past the point you should have a disconnect, then you confirmed it is a Wi-fi problem. Wired ethernet won't have this "disconnect problem" unless the wired NIC goes to sleep, which that is a simple fix in your operating system and power.
Another problem as you posted is you get dropped all of a sudden after 2-3 days. Does the computer ever go into a "deep sleep" per chance? When that wireless radio on that wi-fi powers off, on some cards you might have to restart the base unit to get a connection back to the card, they are just "that picky!" and actually store the MAC address when they should not on disconnect. Most people figure (and even I once thought) it's a base unit problem. I rebooted my linksys wrt54g for 3 weeks straight thinking it was a defective linksys. WIfe gave me the clue that she is surfing just fine on the linksys the whole time, that's when I figured out my blitzz wireless card was actually storing the MAC address of the router. I threw that wal-mart special card in the garbage.
Another thought is if you are using this for a work connection, it's probably is not a hot idea to use wireless. If you are working on sensitive information that can potentially be tracked or snooped, your employer might not find it funny you are doing it wirelessly. Now don't let me paint doom and gloom in this regard, but if I was working on customer sensitive information, or medical information, I definitely would not do it wireless. The risk of hack is too great (even WPA/WPA2 can be cracked!), and at unemployment at 10%, I wouldn't risk it if I was you.
Also- Some Corporate VPN's (for employees that work at home) don't like wireless too well because of the lower MTU, and VPN requires a more stable (no-loss) connection and doesn't handle missed packets between the wireless base and client very well. Unfortunatley, wired is the best option there especially if using SSTP (Secure Socket layer Tunnel Protocol).

Hi guys,
I've tried everything you guys suggested but still no luck. Whenever I call tech support they always tell me its a problem with my computer. (I have a macbook) but 1. its brand new and 2. I took it in and they said everything was fine. This problem is also happening to my brother (who also has a macbook) and to my parent's XP desktop.
I've have people come over to see what was going on and they didn't fix the problem. Could this just be the model of the 2wire modem? The last time I spoke with support she told me they haven't made an updated version since 2007 so that may be why it can't run on my 2010 macbook.
This is really frustrating. I try everything that gets suggested and when it doesn't work, someone has to turn it around and blame the computer for the modem/connection not working. Doesn't make sense. If anyone found a way to resolve this problem can you let me know?

I picked up on this thread as I have a similar problem. We have computers hard-wired to the 'net, but have been using our iPhones to connect to the WiFi network, via our 2Wire modem. Things worked fine until yesterday. This this AM with no connection, I finally called AT&T Internet services because I kept getting this unable to connect message when I tried to connect my iPhone 4 to the WiFi connection.
So I finally got passed off from the Internet folks, to a tech support for fee center. They quoted me $49 to have a technician diagnose and fix the problem. But wait...two phones, that will be $99. Huh. I was also told the WiFi service was MY responsibility, not theirs, and they don't fix problems for free. Now if you read this page on the AT&T site, http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/internet/wifi.js
Also, I have tried the fixes that were recommended and so far nothing works. I think I have a bad modem, but after all it's several years old.
Any more suggestions?

might try delete-ing the iphone out of the 2wire and let it find it again.
Also another thing to make sure of is make sure (and you might need a laptop with a wireless nic and a program called "netstumbler") your wireless 2wire is not transmitting on a popular channel. I had one guy that cleared his wireless issues when we figured out there was 13 other wireless routers all on channel "6". I had him move it to channel "9" and that resolved his wireless problems. Thing is when they all transmit on channel "6" the wireless devices gets confused as to which one to obey. It's a high possibility the wireless devices might be suffering from the same thing.

I have the problem with 2wire and a new computer that I just got with Wndows 7 on it.
I still have my old desktop hooked up and it works FINE with the wireless 2wire modem/router.
My laptops ALL work FINE as well.
THE PROBLEM:
Randomly (but quite often!) whenever I click to go onto the internet, (using the new computer with Windows 7) it's as if it overloads something in the 2wire....and it goes OFFLINE ..."wireless" light on 2wire blinks red, then "DSL" and Internet" lights blink a few times, and then if I wait about 30 seconds, I'm back online again. (occassionally it tells me to restart my browser, but not always)
Once I'm on a site, I'm usually good until I try to click to go to something else. Again, it doesn't Always happen, but it happens quite often. BUT ONLY ON MY NEW COMPUTER. I have tried changing to a different channel, it didn't help. I tried to reload the driver and it said that I had the most current one for my unit. 2wire2701 HB-G

I have had the same problem with 2wire 2701 HB-G losing DSL an internet for quite some time.I noticed it all started when I upgraded
from pro 3mb to elite 6mb speed. I have been dealing with it for a year now some days it does it a lot an then other
days not much. I just got the new Pace 4111N router from Att web site an have had it going for the last
three days with no signal drop what so ever. Not sure if it will last but seems good now. They have quit selling the
2wire 2701 HB-G an now sell Pace 4111N an Netgear 7550. I just noticed they have pulled the Pace 4111N
from the web site. Not sure if sold out or something else. If you have a new 2wire router I would have ATT replace
it with one of the new ones they are selling now. I am using window 7 desktop an xp laptop OS. It is not the
OS its the 2wire router. It will not Handel the faster speeds.

Oh by the way, it is not the problem of your computer, as it happens to all devices. Have to hit the reset button virtually every day. But why? No other networks running on the same channel show up on my scans.

My Wi fi too stops working intermitantly.
It was fine yesterday, I was watching a movie on my tablet streaming from netflix till about 7pm. Then this moring, no signal, the modem light for wireless is out, usally its on, green, even if there is no device connected. It did this once before a couple of days ago and the wirless light just came back on by its self at somepoint and was working fine after that.
My regular internet is fine and I tried powering the modem down and back up but the wireless light is still off.
Any suggestions?

My parents are having this same problem. Things were working fine for a long time. The wireless seems to drop whenever we try to use a device wirelessly. The computer that is directly connected with an ethernet cable does not not seem to set the problem off. The problem has steadily gotten worse. In the last month I have not been able to use facetime over my Ipod to communicate with her over hers because the internet is out constantly.
I can not see a cord or the phone jack as being the problem if the direct computer connection does not trigger the issue. Am I wrong?

Your power setting would not have ANYTHING to do with you losing your signal. Instead try this:
Ok listen carefuly: heres the soluation: ATT is clueless as to how to fix this problem. First turn off the WiFi on your cell phone/phones and any other devices in your home that are using the WiFi from your ATT modem. This will allow you to log onto ATT's site at 192.168.1.254 once here click on "Firewall" then click on "Advance Settings" then in the Attack Detection area make sure "Excessive Session Detection is checked" and then in the Security area make sure "Strict UDP Session Control" is also checked. This fixed my problem and so far I have fixed 3 of my friends ATT modems doing the same thing. It's not your modem thats bad, so dont give ATT $100 of your hard earned money.
