i have a laptop windows xp and i get medium speed from my att dsl. i am wireless. on the modem speed when i connect online is 54mbps after trying to surf, i.e. read a news report or look at you tube my speed drops to 24mbps. what is happening? it goes so slow. thanks ahead of time. cyn

How far from the router are you? Are there a lot of other networks in your area?
It's not uncommon to see that if you have moderate to high radio interference. It will show a high speed when data transfer is low, but as the connection has to negotiate more data transfer, it can't handle the error rate so it must reduce the transfer rate until the error rate drops to an acceptable level.
I would look at this thread for usefull information about dealing with interference.

54Mbps is your connection from notebook to the router. It's different when connecting to the internet. ![]()
