Bold 9700 - Sim Unlock?

I want to be able to use my BB Bold 9700 in other countries besides the US. Currently the phone is locked to the AT&T network. When I search this in Google, I get services offering to give me a code for $15 or so. Do I really have to pay a 3rd party to unlock my device? Is there a difference between Sim Unlock and unlocking the phone for foreign use?

The correct term is subsidy unlock and not necessarily SIM unlock.  Have you tried contacting Customer Care to obtain your subsidy unlock code?

Thanks for the advice. I called them and after 10 minutes I was able to get the code! I'm glad I didn't pay someone $15 or $20 for one.

No problem.  No one should have to pay unless the phone is planned on being used on another network.

What you say is true, but I believe the network service provider will only provide you with a free code if you are a current customer, and if you have had your phone for more than six months - sometimes longer. 

If you are not a current customer, or you have just bought your phone, then you have to find a reputable outside source and pay for the unlocking service. 

The last thing you want to do is hard-lock your phone by entering the incorrect mep unlock code too many times.

my problem is this. I'm Togolese, living in Togo. A friend offered me a blackberry Bold 9000 Smartphone bought in USA with at&t. My sim card is not working with the phone. I get this message on the screen : Invalid Sim Card. I don't know how to get an unlock code and solve this problem. Answer me, please. Thank you

I'm trying to do the same thing on my Bold 9700. The customer service guy at AT&T says when he puts the IMEI number into his system, it shows that the subsidy unlock is not available for this model. I even told him that this forum showed that it can be done on this model. He keeps saying "I'm telling you what the system tells me when I enter the IMEI."

Did you give them your IMEI when you did this?

i apologize if what i did is right but i need your advice, I have a problem with my bb bold 9700 after unlocking it from t mobile there nothing i can do with it just receive and make call, no facebook, email and other stuff that a smartphone can do. if you can help me i would appreciate it...thanks

Hi, im having the same problem with you. Do you mind sharing the solution? really appreciate it if you do, it's reallly unconvienient for me right now, i cant use BBM and i cant received any emails. I can received text and calls but what i need right now is the BBM. My phone is a tmobile phone, but now i switched to atnt and the plan is not working

You need an AT&T SIM card. My BlackBerry is unlocked and I can use it on any network that uses SIM cards, but you have to get a SIM card for every carrier that you plan on using in order to use their network.
