If you only need to send from an EDGE connection, use cwmx.com with no authentication. This won't work if you are connected to Wi-Fi.
If, OTOH, you need to send from Wi-Fi, you'll need to find out your e-mail provider's SMTP server settings.

It's pretty common for ISPs to not allow you to use their SMTP servers unless you are connected directly to their network. In the case of your iPhone, this would mean your home Wi-Fi would be the only place it would work. CWMX is AT&T's SMTP relay server, but it only works if connected to AT&T's network (EDGE).
Some users here and elsewhere (do a Google search or search this forum) have had luck getting a free Gmail account and using their SMTP server for mail relay.
COMPLAIN TO COX! The only way they'll ever stop this practice is to hear their customers fussing about it.

EDGE is AT&T's data service (Internet access) that works on your iPhone. If you use cwmx.com as your smtp server, you'll only be able to send mail when on EDGE (that is to say, it won't work on Wi-Fi).

OK, If I have SMPT.SBCGLOBAL.NET as the outgoing mail server, and it works great on 'most' wireless networks (that don't have passwords), is there a universal outgoing mail service that will work? or do I have to use the EDGE network? Is there a newer outgoing mail server that is ATT?
