"Ren: Now listen, Cadet. I've got a job for you. See this button? Don't touch it! It's the History Eraser button, you fool!
Stimpy: So what'll happen?
Ren: That's just it. We don't know. Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?"

If the text are in blue its through iMessage and if green its text message make sure you look at it but yes iPhone to iPhone should be free and counted as data.

Free (but counted as data) as long as it is sent and received via iMessage. If sent or received as a normal SMS or MMS message, then normal text message charges apply. To avoid that, you need to make sure that "Send as SMS" is turned off in Settings/Messages on all iphones.

I think if your iPhone is out of data coverage area, or if you turned off all data connection (no cell data, no wifi), then ATT will send you the iMessage as a regular TXT message.
I think that happened to me before.

if i,essage fails to send to another iphone it will attempt to send as sms, you can turn this option off in the settings. Just remember if the setting is off and it cannot send as imesaage and fails the person will never reciever the text
