Best bet is to download and/or use the iPhone Apple store app and have it check your pricing. While you cannot order your iphone 5 right now it is showing the upgrade price you would be eligible for.

The early upgrade price is $250 over the full upgrade price, plus $36 for activation. So, if you want the 32GB, it's $299 + $250 + $36 = $585

I wasn't "eligible" until 5/8/13, but the price I paid was $649.00 for black 64GB. I also added Apple Care and they charged the $36 activation fee. Now if you want an "unlocked" version, then yes, that will run you close to $900 for the 64GB. So glad I'm an Apple shareholder.

I cannot upgrade until Sept 2013, but I was told on the phone that if I add a line to the plan I will get the promo price. Can anyone confirm this?
However, I would take the 5 and give my son the 4s, but I'd want to keep my number, so could I then switch my number from the 4s to teh 5? Would I get charged the actual price at that point?

Yes, new lines get the full discount price and yes you can also switch the new iphone to your number but you will need to do that at an AT&T store because the sim cards in the 5 and 4s are different sizes. You will not get charged the full price for the new iphone when you do the switch. Just remember, the new line (which will be the 4s) will have a 2 year contract and won't be eligible for upgrade for 18-20 months.

Yes you will get the subsidized (promo) price if you add a line and use it to order the iPhone 5; and yes you can keep your existing number and associate it with the iPhone 5. Sounds like your account currently has just one line on it, so you'd need to open a new line if you want to buy the 5 at the discounted price, then have AT&T swap the phone numbers between the 4S and the 5...people do this quite often so it should go smoothly for you as well.

So if you "add a line" and move your 4S number to the ip5, will they let you take your unlimited data with that number? Interesting.....

I think that I see what you are asking, but I'm not sure. See my example to see if I get it right:
Line 1 #111-111-1111 Currently has iPhone 4S and unlimited data
Line 2 #222-222-2222 Currently has BlackBerry Bold and 300MB data
Line 3 #333-333-3333 New line added with iPhone 5 and 300MB data
You plan to swap the iPhone 5 to Line 1 and put the iPhone 4S on line 3. The iPhone 5 will now have unlimited data and the iPhone 4S will have 300MB of data.

I cannot get that iPhone 5 in the used market is more expensive.
It has been selling at $800 (ATT iPhone 5 16GB Black) according to movaluate. http://movaluate.com/apple/iphone-5-16gb-att-black
They said that the price is from ebay.com
Any idea?

Due to supply shortages, some models of the phone are on backorder. People are getting high prices from people who need it right now and simply don't want to wait for an order to be fulfilled. Another potential reason is a lot of people paying these prices are overseas and are playing a currency game where even at $800 US, it's cheaper than the price they would pay locally. A lot of these people may be surprised when they find that the phone is locked.

as dwill05 said, supply and demand, the supply is constrained, the demand is high, it is amazing what people will pay over and above retail for a trendy item such as the iphone

If you are eligible for a upgrade at a reduced rate then yes, 199.00 for the 16GB iphone then a 250.00 surcharge making it 449.00, if not it is 649.00 for the phone
