the link here states ATT customer
http://osxdaily.com/2012/04/09/unlock-iphone-att/
added to the simple fact that you do not have a contract and was told that they would not unlock seems to point that being a customer is a requirement. It is all speculation since there is no official att guidelines published yet on their site and this is a peer to peer forum so direct contact with customer support is the only official way of finding out

I live in Egypt and my cousin bought me a full price iPhone from AT&T
today i called them and the rep told me that she submitted a request for me and that i should expect the unlock within the next 5 days or so.
But she didn't give me a case number (and i forgot to ask)....is that ok ??

Leroy, did you purchase your iPhone 4 at full price? My iPhone 4 is no longer under contract. After 3 hours on the phone with them, I was told that I have to wait until 2 years after the activation date because the device was subsidized.

I had two representatives tell me that - they're clueless. The chat representatives were much more helpful and successfully unlocked my devices.
I started with a chat representative, then got the email that said that I was ineligible. That's why I called in.
Do you have the iPhone 4 or older models?
I unlocked an iPhone 4 and 4S. The 4 was the phone I upgraded from, and this particular 4S is not associated with an AT&T contract.

If you are going to do an upgrade on your current iphone. even if youre not going to finish the 2yrs you can request for the unlock code.

Hi.
The past July I bought my iPhone 4 in Best Buy, I pay the unlocked price. For personal reasons a couple of months ago I had to come and live in Mexico, since then I can't use my iPhone because it's locked.
What I can do to use my iPhone here? It doesn't have any debt or something like that and I pay the unlocked price.
Hope you can help me.

I don't quite understand what you are saying coolrhyme. I don't have a current iPhone. I upgraded from my iPhone 4 to the Samsung Galaxy Note in March. I have done a no-commitment change since then (which may be temporary). I was still told that I have to wait until July 2012 to get my iPhone unlocked.

You still have your old iphone? since you did an upgrade on your line you can request for a unlock code for your iphone. considering the you did an upgrade where your iphone is.
The reason is you are now getting a new 2 yr contract for the upgrade phone.
Edit
Oh you did a no commitment change for the contract. Yes, you need to wait for the 2yrs to be completed.

But, the Galaxy Note started a new contract in March 2012 that runs until March 2014.

How is this possible? You upgrade your old iphone line to a note and changed to a nokia lumia 900? did you file for a exchange? if yes? you can still file for a unlock case for your old iphone.

I didn't do an exchange. I plan to switch back and forth between phones. AT&T said that I didn't "pay" off the iPhone before upgrading, so I have to wait until July 2012.

Just keep trying. AT&T told me the same thing about my iPhone 4 the first couple times I tried. After some perserverence, I finally got someone who pushed the unlock through. The successful attempt was through the busuiness chat support for whatever it's wo rth.

So after reading through the forum, I have the understanding that the only way that they can be unlocked from att/apple is that you have to have a current account with them, correct?
If this is true this totally sucks, I have 1 3g, and 2 3gs, got from my sister, she has since switched to verizon long before the 4 came out.
Can you call them and give info over phone, or can you go into the stores?
Anyone know the process on that?

If I DID NOT buy this AT&T-LOCKED iPhone 4 directly from at&t but I do have an at&t account (No iPhone plan though)..
I bought a used iPhone 4 and want to unlock it so I can use it when I travel..
My question is: Will at&t unlock the iPhone?

First post here so please bare with me!
When I heard the news that AT&T was doing this iphone unlocking this, I almost jumped off my chair in excitement realizing that finally AT&T listened to their customers. More reading about it told me that was only for out of contract users. Those of us with iPhone 4 and still in contract are stuck once again.
I can understand why AT&T is doing this to those out of contract and else but I'm not seeing why not also include those still in contract. Even if our phones were unlocked, we'd still honor our contracts and pay our monthly fees. There would be no loss to AT&T regardless of what we would do with our lovely unlocked iphones. When I traveled out of country several times a year, having this fancy phone found no better use than as a Touch and I had to use a crappy phone just to make calls. What a shame!
From a frustrated AT&T customer and iphone 4 owner.
