Use the unlocking portal.
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/
If you can supply the required info, AT&T wil unlock them. If not, they won't.

I want to UNLOCK my iPhone for using in another country. A few weeks ago, so I requested and submitted my phone information to your website, but you (Customer Care) said as following:
We are unable to complete your request at this time due to the following reason:
This iPhone was previously reported as lost or stolen by an AT&T customer.
I can't understand what is the problem; I bought this phone at one of your center and never I have reported anything (such as stolen or lost) to you. Please check it out. Thank you.

Hi,
I'd like to use my Iphone 5 in when I travel abroad. In order to do that the iphone needs to be unlocked.
I was told by AT&T rep that my 2year contract needs to expire first or I need to cancel the AT&T service?
This is not fair to the AT&T costumers!
This is another glitch - in order to post this you need to select "a Board"and the only board you can select is " Tones, games,videos...

This rule has been discussed in great detail. To have your iPhone unlocked by ATT, you have to follow their rules that were in place when you bught your iPhone.

Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase a new iPhone (AT&T), out of contract, and use a registered GoPhone SIM card to "activate" the iPhone on AT&T's network?
The GoPhone SIM and service will be legitimately purchased and activated, but the iPhone, again, will be brand new with no contract.
I've used the iPhone with GoPhone service in the past and have had my iPhone successfully unlocked for free via AT&T due to being a GoPhone customer. The terms were slightly different than those for a contracted customer, either way, they kindly unlocked my iPhone for me. Thanks for any assistance.

There are methods of getting the Iphone to work as a gophone, google them, you will not get any support from ATT since they do not have the iphone listed as a valid gophone. If you are going to pay full retail price for the phone, get the factory unlocked version through apple and not the no commitment version

The rules are quite clear. If you don't have the account information for the AT&T user who had the iPhone on their account, or can't provide proof that the phone was bought at full retail from an authorized retailer, then AT&T won't unlock the phone. Your only options are to look at third party unlocking solutions, or to send the phone back to your uncle and see if he can use it or get his money back.

i've a non-smart phone, but want to use my free upgrade (pay $100 for iphone 4s). i'll be traveling a lot this year and need an unlocked phone to use internationally. i've called at&t customer service and they said they wouldn't unlock it for me unless i upgrade from a smartphone to another smartphone. i think it's B S. (esp. since they will lose me as a customer (aka money) since it'd be pointless to continue their service if i can't use an unlocked phone). i've read some forum posts that i might get better luck trying to unlock it in store rather than via phone service.
does anyone know if i'll have any chance of unlocking it? i need to know before i actually buy it. and if i buy it can i return it if i can't get it unlocked?
thanks

To get an unlocked iPhone, you must buy it that way and pay FULL retail price which I believe is around $650.

Hi All,
I need help to unlock an iPhone 4S bought at AT&T at the 'no commitment' price.
When I send the request form and the fax with the receipt, the IMEI and the request number, I obtain always the same answer :
Thank you for contacting AT&T Customer Care about unlocking your iPhone.
We are unable to complete your request at this time due to the following reason:
- Faxed documentation is ineligible or not received.
So I'm gone in the AT&T store where I bought this iPhone and the receipt is correct and eligible.
I don't know what I can try now... try until I have a favorable answer?

Hello,
I bought a second hand unblocked iphone 3G that I was told it belonged to an spanish company and had been unblocked officially by this company. A month ago and since my operative system was too old to use many applications that I needed, I decided to actualize it. It happenned that the iphone was actually "jailbroken" so the actualization restored the original settings of the iphone, including its "lock to the company". I called Apple and I have been told that my iphone it belongs to AT & T.
I've done the application for unblocking but I'm not able to send a faxed copy of the original receipt since I don't have it. Neither I can contact the person who sold it to me. It's possible that I can unblock the iphone without it?
Thank you very much

I am an att customer. At first they told me that they can unlock my iphone 4s because I am going overseas for a month. Then when I filled the request form, I have gotten an email that my phone can't be unlocked because it was reported stolen by the previous owner. I am the only owner of this phone, I bought it brand new from them and still have the receipt. I called customer service about this only to find out that they can't unlock my phone because my contract isn't over yet?! They have unlocked my friends phone because she was going overseas for a vacation, now, why can't they unlock my phone???!!! so mad right now.

AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances:
- The person requesting the unlock is:
- a current AT&T customer or
- a former AT&T customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the account
- The iPhone was designed for use on AT&T's network
- All contract obligations, including any term commitment, associated with the device to be unlocked have been fully satisfied; and
- The iPhone has not been reported lost or stolen.
they will unlock most other phones while still under contract obligation as long as they are not exclusive to att, then it is after 12 months, some phones they will not unlock
