thanx a lot
you might not find any in stock, the store cannot unlock them you will need to submit the paperwork using the online form here in this forum. Not sure if Apple is selling a factory unlocked version yet. You might find one there, if you buy from Apple you want to make sure if is labeled Factory unlocked and not No Commitment.
Be aware that a US Iphone will not work on the european bands for LTE so the best you can hope for is 3G connectivity. Apple has different models that work on different LTE bands for Europe

Hi everyone,
I have some problems about unlocking the iPhone 4S that I bought last year. I was in a family plan when I bought the iPhone with 2 years contract. But I got back to my country this October so I canceled my line. The problem is about the ETF. So as you know, my bill is mixed with other members in the family plan. Do the whole family plan bill need to be paid to meet the requirement of unlocking the phone or I just need to pay my amout of the bill?
Thank you!

given what you are explaining, you will not be able to unlocked it. If you are not a customer of ATT the requirement that the device be purchased form a authorzied retailer for full retail price woudl apply. If the phone works in South Africa then it is already unlocked, are you sur this is a att phone and not a verizon or a sprint one - they are two different devices, att is gsm, verizon and sprint are cdma but have a sim slot
The phone is not necessarily unlocked already but since it does work in South Africa, it is definitely not locked to AT&T. It is possible the phone is locked to the South African carrier in which case OP would need to contact them to get unlocked. If, on the other hand, it was originally bought as a Sprint or Verizon phone, then the GSM side was most likely unlocked by them. In other words, the reasons for the phone not working in other locations may have nothing to do with being locked. Perhaps the phone is just not compatible with other networks.
Wingrider, Apple only made one model of the 4s. Regardless of where you got it, every 4s has both the gsm and cdma radios in it.
would love to see the documentation on that one - the destroyed att and verizon 4s I disected did not have a the same numbers on the radios in the guts

My relative in the US bought a contract free iphone 4 from an apple store in the US and send it to Nepal so that I can use it here. The phone is carrier locked to at&t I could not unlock it as there was not any unlocking policy for such phones either from apple or at&t. I learnt from at&t's website that you are now helping people unlock the iphone's bought without a contract from april 2012. I lost the receipt of the phone as it has already been about two years. How can i unlock my iphone?

From what you describe, AT&T won't unlock your phone unless you can produce the receipt. These are the conditions:
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/
The only one applicable to your situation is:
(ii) a person who purchased the iPhone from an authorized location at the "no commitment" price and can provide proof of purchase.

It's a bit telling that none of these drive-by overseas posters ever tell us why they purchased a US AT&T phone and expected it to work in a random country.

What could be other proof of purchase other than the receipt ? I had sent the picture of the face of the box i got from apple at the time of purchase of the phonewhich contained the serial number, IMEI number and other details to at&t. Can't the box be regarded as a proof of purchase ?

Nothing the reciept is the only thing that will verify it was purchased at a authorized resellor and the full retail price of the device. What you give is proof that you have the device in your hand, not where you bought it and what you paid for it - without the receiot you could have purchased it off ebay from a private party.

Ask your relative to go back in their records and get a copy of the reciept. If they gave Apple their email address at the time of purchase they may be able to find a copy of the reciept.
Now if for some reason your reason you can't reach your relative;-) check out dslreports All Things Macintosh.......

Can the credit card statement be regarded as a proof of purchase ? My relative is also using at&t . Will he be able to request the unlock the contract free iphone (which he bought for me) according to the clause
"Current customers will be allowed five (5) unlocks per account, per year, so long as their account is in good standing with no past-due amount or unpaid balance and has been active for at least sixty (60) days."?

I purchased my "unlockable" iPhone5 at full price from an AT&T store on October 12th and have tried to follow the AT&T Wireless unlock request link. I receive e-mail confirmation followed by an e-mail about a week later stating that "We cannot complete your request because this iPhone was previously reported as lost or stolen by an AT&T customer". First of all, my phone was bought from AT&T (in a store) and I never reported it as lost or stolen. Secondly, the unlock request link did NOT ask me or provide any options to provide a copy of my receipt. No fax# or e-mail link (for customers who no longer have fax) to submit a copy of my purchase receipt. When I call AT&T "Customer Support" they told me they didn't see my phone reported as lost or stolen and that they could resubmit a request on my behalf (which I agreed to). Then nothing happens (no e-mail confirmation). I've tried this 3 times. very frustrating considering I'm "off contract" and paid full price for the iPhone5 in an AT&T store. What gives?![]()

I went to an AT&T store (Aurora, CO) on Friday 10-12-12 and they had a white i5/32 in stock that my son got. I placed an order for a black i5/64 the same day and the AT&T store had it in stock on the following Wednesday (5 days later).

The original AT&T SIM card will do nothing for you. Since you didn't buy it from an authorized retailer at full price, the only option available to you is if you have the original owner's account info, or if they submit the unlocking request. The information you need to provide AT&T is not on the SIM.

All eBay buyers receive the seller's email and mailing address.

Doubt it, but you can try. Used means it was activated by someones else and can still be traced back to the account. Also not sure that amazon US will ship out of country
