Under current policy, that is correct. You must be out of contract. There have been reports of some unlocks occurring sooner but I have not seen that officially. Over time I would not be surprised to see it change but it is not going to be for a phone just into it's new contract.

Here are the rules, same as for the existing phones:
https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/
If you have a contract on the iPhone 5, you'll have to wait until it's been satisfied before getting it unlocked.

I am in Dubai and wish to unlock my iphone 4S. Is this possible?

Hello!
I am from Portugal and in 2009 I bought an iphone 3GS in New York locked to AT&T.
Last week I heard that AT&T is unlocking all the iphones with more than 2 years and will be amazing if I can unlock mine.
However I am having some problems. I cant complete my registration in AT&T account cause I am not an US resident and dont have an AT&T mobile card. Without registration I cant chat with AT&T so I can give them all informations I have in my bill about the iphone and then they can unlock it.
I am writting to ask if anybody can help. If there are any other way to complete my register and then chat with them. I know I can call directly to AT&T from Portugal but the phonecall is too expensive.
Does AT&T have any email so I can email them?
If anybody can help me i will aprecciate.
Thanks to all answers ![]()

Note that AT&T isn't unlocking all phones over two years old. They are unlocking them for customers who have completed their contract. For non customers, they will ask for proof of purchase of the phone at full retail price from an authorized retailer.

You need to probably call ATT directly via Skype and get your reciept to them showing that you paid full price for the phone. There is very little that can be done through the web if the online tool cannot help. The phone number is in my signature.

The best way i got it working, was to call them after about 7 days of faxing in my reciept - as i could not wait any longer and had not received any communication from them in those 7 days.
the phone was unlocked over the phone call itself.

HELP
I fill out the info online via the link provided. I got email saying
Request number: xxxxxx
Thank you for contacting AT&T Customer Care about unlocking your iPhone.
We cannot complete your request because we found no valid current or former mobile or account number for this request.
If you have questions, review the general eligibility requirements for unlocking an iPhone.
Thank you for your business. For other questions about our wireless service or iPhones, contact AT&T Customer Care at (800) 331-0500
I have a current account with ATT and my contract are long fulfilled (onto the 3+ year)
I called the 800# and the customer CSR seems have no clue and just ask me to do the www.att.com/deviceunlock and follow the instruction.
Can anyone help?

Did you buy the phone from att and has it ever been active on your account - IE was the device active on your account and have a phone number associated with it, if so call them back, there is no assistance on the website. Suspect that just becasue you are a customer does not mena you automaticly get a unlock unless the iphone was yours to start with

I bought the iphone under my name and activate on my account for 3 years and the phone # is ATT assigned comes with the Iphone. I call CSR and she told me that my account and Iphone are all OK. So I try the unlock URL again, and still got the same email as first time.
Wonder why?

click on this link
read the documentation, then click next to fill out the forum. If you qualify or can supply the required documentation you will get it unlocked. Not all phones are eligible for unlock

I brought Phone 4 from AT&T store 2 years back and I am out of contract now. On 09/13 submitted request to unlock my iphone thru AT&T website and got a confirmation with request Number and I called AT&T to find out status today. CSR informs me a case was never submitted and CSR created a Case ID and said someone will contact by 09/28. This is really what upsets me about AT&T customer service.

My brother is going to give me an unlocked iPhone 4S (unlock request is granted). He already brought the unlocked 4S to T-Mobile store and it can be used on T-Mobile network. Because I am going to Taiwan for research reason, could I use local SIM there on this unlocked iPhone 4S?
Any help is appreciated.

I read your Policies but I don't really know if the phone is already off contract (how could i know this information ??). I wolud like to chat or email with the at&t customer service but on the web site they want me to link a type account that i never had......
I would really appreciate any help !

how did you buy yhe phone and was it on a att contract held by you? Sound like you bought it used off of ebay or craig list, unfortunately if you where not a customer with that phone on att's network the only way you will get it unlocked is if you can supply a recipet from a authorized dealer for full retail price of the phone, or, failing that track down the riginal owner of the phone and request they unlock it for you.

If it's a AT&T phone that has been factory unlocked by AT&T, you can use any carrier's compatible SIM card. All you need to check is that the phone's frequency is compatible with the carrier you want to use.

there is no PUK code for a iphone
follow this link, read the requirements, select the current or past customer if you can supply the account andphone number that was assigned to the iphone when it was on the network and submit, if you bought it used or are ot a customer select that optiona and supply the required documentation when they send you the email -
If you are neither a current or previous customer or cannot supply the required documentationchances are the phone will not be unlocked

according to the link - as long as you buy it from a authorized outlet and pay full retail price for it yes - ebay, craigslist and the such are NOT authorized dealers, the drop down list at the sute show
1. ATT
2. Apple
3. ATT authorized retailer
buy it at one of those locations pay the full retail price - 649/749/849 (or is it 699/799/899) and you can request the unlock, you will be required to fax a copy of the paid invoice to them
