AT&T to begin unlocking off-contract iPhones this Sunday, April 8th [ Edited ]

To repeat parts of my story that people were unsure of, I was only an AT&T customer from July 09 to Feb 10 when I left the US for Asia and paid the ETF. So I haven't had a "current' AT&T account since then, but they were able to look up my closed account on Sunday and as of today my 3GS is unlocked. So you definitely don't need to be an ongoing customer today to get unlocked.

Also, when I did the backup/restore today, after a couple of early steps in the process I got a pop-up in iTunes saying "Congratulations! Your iPhone is now unlocked!" So you'll know when it works. On the About screen it still says Carrier: AT&T 12.0, but I assume that's only because I still have that SIM in there.

When you backup and restore, do you restore from the backup, or restore as new, or does it matter? TIA.

NO!  The locking and unlocking comes from Apples activation servers.  The iPhone does not work like other GSM phones that use codes.

Thanks. I did backup and restore as instructed in my ATT instruction email, and my iphone has been restored successfully. But I didn't see/don't remember seeing any mesg telling me "unlock complete." So does that mean it's not unlocked yet? is there anyway to tell besides insert a non att sim, since I don't have any except a foreign sim that doesn't work in the US?

Hi.

I bought AT&T locked iPhone a year ago and talked in Russia. Recently I've upgraded and my phone ain't working because baseband has been inceased within iOS. Now I use additional GSM module with device but it's Chinese technology style isn't good idea. Would the official  unlock procedure help me to get full unlock?

I've heard that some special contracts and phones cannot be unlocked by the cell operator. And how to leave the request and how much does it cost?

Call ATT and see if your phone is eligible, they are the only ones who can help.  Skype can be an option to make the call.

This sucks, its been 3 days now/72 hrs and still no email ): I talked to a representative today and asked what is the current status of my case, and they said it was still active, and I asked them if it is a garantee unlock if I have a case on file, and they said it is most likely yes. 

So everyone, if you have a case filed in, it is a guarantee unlock for your phone. I mean they wouldnt file a case if you didn't qualify for the unlock right?

Since it's an iPhone 4S, you probably won't be eligible to unlock it unless the original buyer payed non-commitment pricing for it, which I doubt, considering that's the price of the unlocked GSM iPhone as well. I'd contact the seller for your money back, and I'm so sorry for your issue. You'll need to call AT&T to check your iPhone's unlock eligibility.
