From what I read, you must have an AT&T account to get a phone unlocked. you can try calling AT&T, that is your only other option.

This is a customer helping customer forum and you CANNOT get a phone unlocked here.

I have my Iphone 4, which works only on At&t carrier. I bought Iphone in America and then I  transported it  to Russia. To take him away, I paid for the two-year contract. And now i have an opportunity to get official unlock for my Iphone. But for At&t intenet account i need my phone number. And it's a problem. I didn't get an At&t phone number, because i didn't  turn iphone on in America. I have any information about my Iphone and At&t simcard: Imei number, Iccid number, Serial number... Can i get my phone number? What information is needed to know my phone number?

Suspect that more than a few of these <3-post users posting requests to have their iPhones unlocked are either:

1) Non-AT&T customers, since if they were indeed AT&T customers they'd be smart enough to know that the appropriate method for requesting an unlock would be to contact AT&T via phone or chat, rather than posting a request on an online forum that does not handle such requests at all;

2) Folks looking to make a quick and/or small profit by selling their previously-locked iPhones

I mean, there was at least one post from a user who explicitly indicated that he/she wasn't even an AT&T customer, yet was asking as to whether his/her AT&T-locked iPhone can be unlocked.  Unless I'm mistaken, at a minimum you must be a current AT&T customer before you can even begin to ask AT&T to unlock your iPhone, regardless of whether the iPhone that you're looking to get unlocked is currently locked to AT&T...no?

If I'm not mistaken, if you return the phone you'll revert back to your old contract dates. You may have to pay the ETF for 4 months of service, but that might not be a bad deal if you get an unlocked iPhone out of the deal.

Several non-AT&T customers have gotten their phones unlocked - or at least they had the ticket made. Since the policy does mention you can get an unlock after paying an ETF, you probably don't need to be a customer.

Put in a request on Sunday. iPhone 4 bought from AT&T closed by paying ETF.

Received the unlock mail today.

I didn't have the original AT&T sim as I was using a Gevey interposer unlock. I went ahead with backup and restore. Initially didnt work as the Gevey interposer was there.

Removed it from the SIM tray and reseated. Worked like a charm. 

Now off to upgrade the OS to iOS 5. Yipee

I am not in the US, neither do i have an AT&T account. But when i called +1 800 331 0500 (with Skype), the representative was very helpful. He asked for the IMEI number and inquired about where did i buy this phone? i said it was a gift. He put me on hold for a minute and then asked for my email.  He said the unlock code and directions to unlock will be received by email after at most 5-7 business days. Fingers crossed
