I was upset about my iPhone 4s 64gb black pre-order back order status so I called the retail store at our local mall where I placed the order last Friday 7Oct. The manager told me if the phone had not shipped, he would cancel the order and give me a phone that they had in stock. Finally! Someone with a solution, or an alternative to the apologies I received from everyone else.
This is exactly what I did about 2 hours ago. There were very few customers in the store and the people there could not have been more helpful. I do not work for AT&T, but they did restore my faith in business finding a solution to what was becoming a pre-order PR nightmare. Needless to say....next time I will pick up the phone.
Kudos to manager Dan {Personal content removed for safety} and sales person Azariah at the Park City AT&T in Lancaster, PA. Job well done.

I just did the same thing. I had a white 64g that was still on backorder. I decided to go down to the ATT Store where I initially did the "Pre-order" They were able to cancle my order, and I now have my new iPhone 4S in hand!
Another huge thanks to Assistant Manager Andrea {Personal content removed for safety} AT&T Store! Now thats how customer service is done!

Same here, I will never pre-order thru AT&T again. AT&T really blew it with me on this one. I ordered my iPhone 4S between 12-1 CST on 10/07/11 and was told my phone would be delivered today. Still no tracking# and chat support just told me it could be 3-4 weeks before phone is delivered. Totall unacceptable AT&T!

wow! i just tried that in Reston, VA and got turned back. got a good rep working there and said he had to turn back others too..looks like you got wise, business-directed managers there...
then i got that crazy txtmsg from att, "thanks for pre-ordering...please don't come to the store".
store had few people in it (less than 10) so those phone are just sitting there and we were foolish enough to pre-order instore!

I just called my local AT&T and they said even though mine is on backorder they cannot cancel it... If I go into the store do you think they would let me? I do not have time to wait 2-3 weeks for the phone to arrive...

Well I just asked over the phone if I could do that, and they said no. I plan on going into the store in a bit and seeing if they can, and if not, {word filter evasion} them, I'm going to sprint...

I called my local AT&T and they told me they would not be able to cancel my pre-order.
If I bought a phone in the store, would I be able to return my pre-order once it arrives for a full refund? Seems like it would be a yes, but I am curious if there would be an problems or if anyone has had issues trying this in the past with other iphones.

No problem doing this at the 1050 Connecticut Ave. store in DC for a white 64GB - they were out of all 16GB as of about an hour ago.

My friend ordered two phones from Sprint at 4am on 10/7 - two hours before my AT&T preorder. Mine arrived, hers are still backordered.

I agree and the same thing just happened to me. Why they can't cancel a pre-order for a phone they don't even have is beyond me. If it's not shipped, cancel the {word filter evasion} order. At least tell people on your website that your out of the phone BEFORE the entire order is submitted. {word filter evasion} AT&T. I am tired of their {word filter evasion} anyway. I am cancelling my service with them and going to Sprint. I'm denying delivery when the phone arrives from AT&T.

That's what my fiance' did. He picked up his new iPhone from Verizon just a few minutes ago. He said he will never give AT&T his money again.

I'm sorry to read about the continued bad experiences. It's hard to understand the inconsistent response to what AT&T had to know would be typical high demand. We are fortunate there are some managers that think creatively. It was obvious the retail people at my store site had to do some extra work on the computer - especially by the manager - to cancel the pre-order. I told him about the negativity on the support forums and how I would post something favorable since he apparently set a precedent.

After hearing about the cancelled pre-orders I went to my local store in Seattle, WA. I was turned away, I was very polite and explained how other stores have done this for customers. They said they could not do this. IMHO this means they WILL NOT do it, because it is clearly possible.
At least you can always count on AT&T to be consistently inconsistent. Wow. Frustrating I can just walk into a store and buy a new phone right now, yet I pre-ordered a week ago and won't have my phone for at least another 7 days (at best?).
Maybe I'll try again tomorrow...maybe a different manager will be working. LOL. What a crock AT&T...I've been a customer for 12 years...

Also, my theory on why they won't let us cancel our preorders(at least for most of us): It is so they will have phones in store to lock in other new customers, instead of giving them to the customers that they already have by the ba**s, like yours truly. "Good" business by ATT in terms of sales, but I have the feeling that many disgruntled customers are going to be jumping ship at the end of their agreement--I know I definitely am. This is no way to do business if you want repeat customers.

Yep, I would have to say that your theory is right on! We're stuck and they know it, but it's only for 2 years. By then there will be a 4G network in many more places, there will be a 4G iPhone by then AND Verizon and Sprint will have 2 years to get their networks up to par with AT&T. Enjoy these 2 years AT&T because I have a feeling you'll be losing many loyal customers over this. Also, I already know of some that you've lost. It's pretty sad that people are willing to leave AT&T's faster 3G network for slower 3G networks just to get away from poor customer service.
Also, I've been posting my complaint all over the web. I hope the story gets out about how many unsatisfied customers AT&T has over this. I've posted an iReport on CNN about it, made a Tweet on Twitter about it and I am currently trying to get an email into Foxnews.com about it. People should know and I'm doing everything I can to let them know about this.

Hey AT&T -- why don't you listen to the people! Why the heck would I pre-order a phone that will arrive in 28 days when I can cross the street and get a phone right now? I've been on hold for 45 mins trying to get to a supervisor to cxl the new phone I ordered. How many iPhone campaigns have you been through now? And you still can't get it right?
Also, the CA Dept of Consumer Affairs has something to say about consumer cancellation rights:
Telephone Sales (when order has not been filled) -- 30 day cancellation period (B&P 17538(a), 16 CFR Part 435).
A number of laws give consumers a legal right to cancel contracts in specific transactions within a short time after the consumer signs the contract, and without giving the seller or other party a reason or having to show "legal cause." This Legal Guide includes a list of these transactions and the periods allowed for canceling them. Note that some cancellation periods are measured in business days.
A consumer-buyer can cancel these kinds of contracts for any reason (or for no reason) and need not explain. Typically, there is no penalty for canceling under these statutes. In order to cancel, the buyer need only send the seller written notice of cancellation within the period allowed by statute. (Most cancellation periods begin when the consumer receives written notification of his or her right to cancel.)
In order to cancel, the buyer must sign and date the cancellation notice, which must state that the buyer is canceling the contract. The buyer should send the notice to the seller by certified mail, return receipt requested, at the address that the seller has given in the sale documents. The buyer should keep a copy of the notice for his or her own records, and to be able to prove that the notice was given and what was said.
Generally, the buyer's notice of cancellation is effective when it is deposited in the mail with the proper address and postage. The buyer should note the exact date, time and place of mailing on the buyer's own copy.

Oh, wait, they just disconnected me! I made sure that the rep had my cell phone number in case we got disconnected. Hmmm.. .funny that she is not calling me back. Or, perhaps it's just a "dropped call". AT&T, you just can't get it right.
