Why is it that when some people are trying to bring some change in this world for the better and stand up for consumer rights, there are always people that rain on our parade? If things do change, EVERYONE benefits.
If you're not going help, that's ok. But why assume we can't make any changes? Why have such a negative attitude to what we're doing? Why just let things be the status quo?
It angers me to know that some poeple are so weak and scared and hopeless. Grow some balls!

See, I was with you right up until the last part. I can appreciate what angers you. Now let me tell you what angers me. People who make a decision to do something and when that decision turns out to be a bad one, they want to yell and scream that they were somehow done so, so wrong. I went through the same process as everyone else. Nowhere during the pre-order screen that I saw through AT&T or Apple did it say you were guaranteed your phone on the 14th. There could have been a multitude of problems that prevented those phones from even getting stateside from the manufacturer, then there are another million things that could stop that shipment from getting to your door. AT&T, nor Apple, would be dumb enough to guarantee delivery of anything. Their liability in situations like this would be too great. If you all would have stopped to think of this, you would realize that it's all a game of chance.
As has been said many times before, AT&T cannot sell what Apple does not give them. This year, inventory was split three ways instead of everything going to AT&T with previous releases. Apple does not have the foresight to anticipate exactly how many pre-orders they will have. If you thing that you can place an order today and that Apple can magically make that many iPhones appear and still have stock to put into its stores, you're living in a fantasy world.
The fact of the matter is, it's a phone. What really gets under my skin is the fervor with which you all fight for your "right" to have a silly piece of electronic equipment [Per Guidelines: Keep it Relevant and Appropriate].

at&t did sell the phone we bought a week after we bought them... and as people have stated b4 it is not the fact that we have to wait... it is that we were told they sold out, then they sold phones to walkin customers, that we had reserved.

You have a sad outlook on life. You think, because AT&T didn't explicitly say "WE GUARANTEE" that everything is up to chance?? Are you serious right now?? Is this how you live your life?? Do you think a multi-billiion dollar company leaves anything to chance??? So then it would be safe to say if things don't turn out the way you thought and there was no "guarantee" you'll make up some excuse for yourself you can sleep better at night?? Go ahead and live life like that if it pleases you.
This is exactly the same scenario that has happened to AT&T TWO PREVIOUS TIMES!!! It happened when 3GS and 4 was launched. AT&T should've learned their lesson from the previous two times and corrected this matter. But they didn't because there are people like you out there that make excuses for them and let them slide.
AT&T already HAD the phones. They just decided to take more orders and charge more credit cards so that in their company statistics they can claim more iphones were sold. That's how business is run. These numbers appear as thought they had better sales figures for the sake of board of directors and AT&T stock prices. However, the truth of the matter is, when the first shipment of iphones run out, AT&T switches to tell the rest of the pre-order customers that the phones are back-ordered. That's what happened to us. It was never that Apple couldn't meet the iphone orders from AT&T. AT&T already had the phones in the first place. But took more orders than they had phones. Now AT&T wont let us cancel our orders because, then the sales figures will drop. Get your facts right before arguing about business logistics.
Again, it's NOT ABOUT RECEIVING A PIECE OF ELECTRONIC ON TIME!!!!! It's about unscrupulous business practice. I would have no problems if AT&T told me from the BEGINNING that the orders were back ordered and had a delivery time of 21-28 days. It's the fact that:
1) AT&T took more orders they had phones for (Lack of business integrity)
2) When phones ran out, switched the customers to back order status without previous disclosure of status to customers.
3) Not allowing the customers to cancel order that has a back order status of 21-28 days.
WHERE ABOVE DOES IT SAY I'M ANGRY BECAUSE I DIDN'T GET MY PIECE OF ELECTRONIC ON TIME?!

so knowing their previous record, you still chose to patronize them again this time. {Please keep it courteous}
you don't have to say, 'i am angry'. your user name, all caps and previous posts speak for you. {Please keep it courteous}
clearly you missed my point. all the money in the world won't stop a plane from crashing or a warehouse from burning down. the point is there is no control for chance.
good luck with your campaign. i can promise you if all this kicking and screaming causes AT&T to cave, this will only start the snowball rolling.

I've read many of the comments on this and other threads and I must confess at first I thought some of the complaints were maybe not well founded. Now that I have had an opportunity to experience AT&Ts lack of customer care first hand all I can say is wow I had no idea it could be this bad. I ordered three new phones on the evening of Oct. 7. I did receive email confirmation shortly afterwards. Later that evening I received an email from AT&T stating the available funds on my credit card could not be verified. I spent the better part of the next 18 hours trying to get through to AT&T to see what the problem was. When I finally got through on the afternoon of Oct.8 I was told my credit card info was fine and I had been sent the message in error. I asked the CSR if this would delay my order and I was told no. Later that day I received more emails from AT&T again stating my credit card funds could not be verified and my order was going to be cancelled if I did not call. Again I spent hours getting through only to be told once more the message was sent to me in error. To be sure I asked if this error would have any effect on delaying my order and was told no. On Oct. 21 I checked my order status because acquaintances I know who had ordered after me had already been receiving their phones. My order was listed as backordered and showed an order date of October 8. I have now spent hours talking to various CSR folks and two supervisors. I have been informed that my order was moved back to the next day because of the glitch. All I am asking is for my order to be handled according to the date I ordered. It was no fault of mine that AT&T had a glitch in their order system. I honestly thought this would be an easy fix because I wasn't asking for any favors, I just want to be treated fairly. Was I ever wrong!!!! The folks I have talked to admit my order was mishandled, they admit AT&T had a glitch that caused my problem, they admit I was misinformed when the CSR people told me my order would not be delayed. The last supervisor I talked to even agreed I was not being treated fairly. The bottom line is they all have told me there is nothing they can do. I was so surprised and disappointed when the first supervisor told me this. I just could not believe a major company would not address an error on their part. I followed a different phone tree path and talked to a second supervisor and again was told there was nothing they could do. I was told my phones were 2-3 weeks from being shipped. The manner in which AT&T has failed to do the right thing is just flat out wrong.

We can do this ALL day!
Thank God I didn't pre-order the first two times (3GS and 4). I found out that the same debacle happened the first two times when I pre-ordered this time and did some research when my order went awry. You're right. If I did pre-order the first two times and expected the same result, I would be insane. But, that's not the case. You're not dealing with someone who's crazy.
And...DO YOU READ THE POSTS PRIOR TO REPLYING??? Did you read Post 19??? I specific said...And I quote myself, "I'm not entirely un-happy with AT&T. As matter of fact, I like AT&T's service where I am. I like the fact that I can surf and talk. I am just unhappy that I was lied to during the pre-order process. And that I can't cancel my order. I don't want to shut them down. But at the same time, I don't think I should take it up the butt by AT&T just because I like their service." So, before you tell someone to have a reality check, why don't you check if you've read all the posts.
And as far as your "Point" goes...I clearly understand your point...IF what happen with our orders were by CHANCE. But it's not. That's the point you fail to see. You're thinking that AT&T did all they can, but by chance, iphones ran out...or by chance there were too many orders. By chance not all phones got to their customers on time. So they had no other choice but to tell the pre-order customers that their orders where back ordered while there were phones being sold in the AT&T stores. Right...by chance the AT&T stores ended up with all the pre-order phones. Whatever.
I understand that what happened happened this time...like the two previous times. AT&T should've learned their lesson and prepared themselves. Which, obviously, they failed to do. All I want from AT&T is an 1) apology, 2) ability cancel our orders, and 3) be prepared for next iphone launch properly and not take pre-orders more than the number of phones they have. Will I get all my demands? Probably not, but I'm sure going to try.
Thank you for the good luck, and, yes, I'm trying to get the ball rolling...for you, me, and every other AT&T customers to benefit.

I'm sorry, but as a previous peorder customer of the 3GS and iPhone 4 I disagree that what happened with this years 4S preorder ever happened before. As far I can recall, the 3S launch and preorder went well, while last year AT&T had enough 4's in stock to meet the preorders, there wasn't enough in the store to meet the demand on launch day for those who didn't preorder..... Also, please keep in mind when trying to compare previous iPhone launches to this years that the iPhone 4S just on AT&T's network alone has seen the largest amount of sales to date which most likely play hand in Apple not keeping a large enough supply to AT&T to meet the demand..... That said, I am NOT agreeing with the way the whole preorder situation went this year, nor do I condone how difficult AT&T made it for those that wanted to cancel their preorders that were still listed as "backordered" several days after the launch occurred. This is what I would like to see changed with next years iPhone launch.

The previous launches of the iPhones all suffered from this same issue. The boards go crazy due to the lack of good information. This year is no exception just a larger number of orders.

I don't recall the amount of "preorder" complaints last year being as much as this year. Although, I am looking forward to the day when they end and this forum goes back to what it was prior to the launch..... Minus all the rumors, lol. ![]()

I agree to a point. When i went into the store i asked about the time it would take. i was clearly told that it could take up to two weeks but that they expected that i would get it the day after it came out on the shelf. he really sold me on the fact that the last iphone and the ipad2 was in the hands of preorder customers the day of the release. I did not relize it at the time but the sale rep would told me this was paid on how many he sold. 30 million iphone 4s were ready for sale on the day that they released it according to Apple. so the fact that they did not have enough phones to fullfill the pre orders is Bull ATT only reported selling 1 million in the first week. so there is 29 million still out there to be devided by three companies. What this really comes down to is all of the companies have forgotten about good service. they know that the customer does not have a voice and we can not do anything about it. this is why we have to enter a two year contract and why there are only three major service providers and depending on where you live you may have less. I Hate AT&T but i do not have a better choice.
By the way i was the 78th person in my zip code to preorder on the first day. they have not filled any of the orders in my zip code.

I got so fed up that I actually called corporate offices in Dallas. I waited on the automated services for ever just to get ANYONE on the line.
When I finally did, they didn't even want to listen to me, they immediately transferred me back to the number that's the same thing as dialing 611 on your phone. It's so frustrating that I couldn't even talk to someone about the issue that actually has some kind of power over the company. They've been treating us costumers like garbage, I'm sick of it.

"Just a larger number of orders" makes it quite different indeed. Compound that with three US major carriers and a more or less world wide launch and you get high demand with low (split) supply. The high demand is out of question with Apple reporting as much as 4M sold over launch weekend (I assume that to include preorders). What we don't know is the amount of supply and how it is being distributed. It appears unfortunate that addtional walk-in purchase supply is making it to stores across the country before a great deal of preorders have been delivered based on the many complaints across the interweb.
Without much to comment on what I don't know much about (supply), I'd like to share my experience with my 10/7 preorder. I first attempted to preorder online through Apple. I am currently on a family plan with my aunt and uncle (mainly because my parents are overseas and my brother is on his inlaw's family plan on Verizon). I hit a speed bump when it asked me for the last 4 digits of the primary account holder's SSN (I wasn't about to wake up my aunt early in morning). I decided to log into the AT&T website and preorder through there since it does not ask for SSN. Everything was going fine until I got to the part where I choose acceptable data and messaging plans. It would not let me keep my current data plan or my current messaging plan so I decided to do a walk-in preorder during the day when I had time. In hindsight, my mistake was that I decided to go to a local AT&T retail store instead of an Apple retail store. I suppose my reasoning at the time was that my current issue was with data/messaging plans and so it made sense to go to the carrier to see if they could override the default options. The sales guys at AT&T was nice and was able to keep my unlimited data plan as well as my 200 messaging plan. The one issue I had was that he told me about the 14-21 day delay and the no order cancellation policy only after he had me sign all the contracts.
Oh yeah... The store I preordered from has a couple in stock (just checked) but they won't let me cancel my order and just buy it off the shelf. In hindsight I wonder if this was all an institutionalized setup to punish people like me on legacy data and messaging plans. Or maybe just a perfect storm of Murphy's Law.

Murphy's law unfortunately as ATT will put back any plan that got dropped in the process of placing the order. It they wanted to get rid of the plans, they would make it really dificult to get your plans back. I had my 200 messaging plan dropped but added right back.

Not so sure if they would give back an unlimited plan. Now if only I had tethering...
Interesting find: I checked my rate/plans on my account and it says I'm currently on an unlimited iPhone plan that expires in November. There is also an unlimited iPhone 4S plan that I'm supposed to switch to when ever it is that I get my phone. Apparently the plan-phone combinations are strictly paired and do not talk well with a phone/plan they are not specified for. This may in fact give rise to activation issues but right now I'm more concerned with my order and ultimately getting my phone. I just hope I get it before my data plan on my current phone is set to expire.

Agreed. They shouldn't have accepted more pre-orders than inventory. And after they made that mistake, they should allow customers to cancel backordered items so that they can pick up a phone right now in stores.

I feel I have been vindicated. I received a phone call from AT&T Customer Service Dept.
1) They admitted I was treated wrongly. They admitted that I was misled by the CSR that handled my phone calls, and apologized.
2) They admitted that same incidents occurred previously (3GS and 4) and said they are working on new policies to curb these types of incidences.
3) They will cancel my order and credit me a small monetary figure to my account.
Whether the apology was sincere or not is inconsequential. I was happy that they admitted that they were in the wrong. Whether there are actually policies that will change future iphone launches...we will see.

Then file another complaint. Keep at it until you're satisfied.

WhiteTiger686 is not banned, it does not have an email address associated with it at all. You can't use it because you're using the email address you initially used for your new account.
If you'd like, I will remove Upset-Customer and add your email address back to WhiteTiger686 and set it as verified so you can continue using it.
Please let me know what you'd like to do.

Well, I was verified, then it said need to reverify that email... When i tried to send new verification, i get a message that you can not use this email, because this account has been banned. If you could send a verification to WhiteTiger686 that would be great, but this account has a different email than the other one... so it is not a conflict of accounts. They both are different domains.
