Add me to the list. Central NJ.
Full bars. Just started doing this last week. Thought the update would help, nope... same thing. Going to call AT&T. Already did network settings reset.

This has randomly happened to me in the past before but it's been extremely bad since this past Friday. I've restored my phone to factory settings three times and it seems to work for a few minutes then stops again. Has this been happening to anyone else lately?
I'm in Upstate New York...

i've been having the same problems in the sacramento area for a few weeks now. this hasn't been fixed apparently in more than a year. one quick solution, instead of powering off your phone, is to simply turn on airplane mode for about thirty seconds, then turn it off. this will cause a tower search and reset your connection. it seems that whenever a tower timeout happens, the phone just thinks everything is still fine even though it doesn't have a connection. i wish either apple or at&t would do something about this, but to be fair, i'm not sure who's fault it is. the quick jump is to blame at&T for having bad service, but the signal bars i believe are accurate. i think this might actually be a bug in the iphone's radio, perhaps it doesn't properly detect a timeout as it should, and thus keeps up the appearance that it's connected when in fact it's not.

I live in the Bay Area in California and lately I've been having major problems with my iPhone 3GS. (AT&T)
I've had this phone since November 2011 (bought it off a friend therefore I have no warranty).
I've also gone almost a year without any type of problems up until last week.
My phone has full bars when I'm home but reads a "No Service" sign up in the left corner leaving me incapable of sending/receiving texts and calls. I cannot stress enough how frustrating this is especially since I'm applying for jobs & having a working cellphone is dire.
- I tried resetting my phone about 16 times the past three days alone
and sometimes I can send a text or two and maybe a call but then its been starting to reset all by its self.
- I will also randomly get a small batch of old texts from previous hours/days when my phone decides to work momentarily, and its driving me nuts
- I tried resetting my network setting to default, but no luck
- I also took out the SIM card, and toggled the 3G & Cellular Data buttons twice but it didn't work for me.
Just paid my phone bill so I'd like to get my moneys worth before I start looking for other alternatives.
I'm very skeptical about updating to the new iOS 5 because people have been expierencing the same problems so I'm beyond desperate to fix this because I'm not in a position to spend any money on a new phone.
IF ANYONE CAN HELP WITH CLEVER TRICKS TO FIX THIS OBNOXIOUS PROBLEM. I'D APPRECIATE IT GREATLY !

I just moved to Chicago this month and I have been having the same problem. I have a Iphone 4G and I get the worst service ever. The data is so slow that I can't even use the maps. I have used AT&T for 10 years now and never had problems like this. Is there any way to fix this, or does the network just suck in Chicago. If this keeps up I am just going to switch over to Verizon.
