Bit of a success story here, and perhaps a plan of action for those of you who have been waiting so long for iPhone 5 (I was one of you earlier today).
I ordered 9/24, and after seeing how people who ordered before me were still back-ordered, I was determined to find another way. I recommend you check your local(or further) Radio Shack and/or Wal-Mart. You can check Radio Shack stock online (a couple stores near me in Chicago had stock) or call Wal-Mart to ask. I called Wal-Mart and they had 2 16GB WHITE iPhone 5's in stock. I went and got it right away no problem.
I also read how many of you had trouble cancelling your orders. I had this as well when I called 611. I found this number (800-866-1514) in the ATT Terms and Conditions e-mail sent after I ordered, and a LIVE PERSON answered, who CANCELLED my order IMMEDIATELY.

Just checked my order status from 9/19. As of 7:30 pm CST tonight, my black 16GB has come off backorder but I haven't received any shipping info yet. So, for those of us that ordered on 9/19, this may be our week! Keep the faith...

I preordered mine on 9/24/12 and its still on back order...When will it be off preorder does everyone think? Did anyone else order it close to this date that could give me feedback. Its a 16gb black iphone 5.

i ordered mine on 09/23 and still in back order they say it will be shipped between 10/22-10/31 called 3 times and tried to cancel my order and they won't allow me to cancel

It took me 6 phone calls but retention finally a woman who I call an "Angel" was able to do it no questions asked didnt even put up a fight.

hey guys! ok so let me first tell you i ordered a white iphone 5 16gb on the 20th of sept. so as you know i was on backorder for a while and i still was on backorder today. i was fed up with that. so i called the 1800 331 numbER and the lady tried really hard to cancel my order she truly did but she couldnt. i had ordered my phone in store. ok so she asked her supervisor and he recommended i go to the store and cancel it since i ordered it from there. so i go to the store and those people sure have attitudes. they are like sorry we have a policy and we wont do it. i was like why would they tell me to come to the store to cancel where they lying. anyways i called 1800 331 again and the lady talked to the sales rep at the store and he wouldnt cancel my order. so i got the phone and asked her for the sales number. NOW FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO CANCEL AND GET A PHONE FROM APPLE CALL 1888 444 4410! the guy who helped me was GREG. AMAZING person he canceled my order within 5 mins! i got a confirmation email saying it was canceled! so then i went home and searched and searched. a local radio shack had the phone in stock! only 1 but they had it. i called them and the nice lady even held the phone for me! i have my phone with me! after about 3 weeks. i will never preorder from this company again.
IN THE END PEOPLE CALL THIS NUMBER IF YOU WANT TO CANCEL. 1888 444 4410!!! try to find a rep named GREG! good luck and this phone was worth all the anger

just call them before hand. and it said they had them in stock i called and there was 1 there. so it varies i guess but call before you cancel.. i cancelled beforehand and just got super lucky i found one

Since we have so many more posters than readers, let's recap what was known and posted before Sept. 14, when pre-orders began:
- It's better to order from Apple than AT&T.
- It's better to order online than on the phone or in the store.
- Every new iPhone sells out quickly.
- 64GB and 32GB iPhones ship faster than 16GB iPhones.
- Black iPhones ship faster than white iPhones.
- Check your status and your credit card authorization after you order.
- Nothing happens until "Back-Ordered" changes to "0."
- Orders usually ship 1-3 business days after "Back-Ordered" changes to "0."
- After release, Apple has better in-store availability than AT&T.
- Incessant "what's the status?" calls and chats with Customer Care waste both your time and their time.
Reading is fundamental. A little research could have prevented a lot of heartache.

Ok guys, here is the dilemma now. i have placed an order on 09/30 and ofcourse it is on BO. Now i checked on Radio shack and it is available. What is the best and most effecient way to approach and handle the situation. I don't want to cancel the ATT order and then drive to the radio shack only to find out that the phone was sold out. On the other hand, how can i buy the phone from Radio Shack while i still have an order with ATT?

What deposit? what restocking fee? you have not even gotten the phone yet, where is the stocking and restocking? did you already pay for the phone or pay a diposit? i didn't

None of the apple stores have any the only ones available were black 32GB.. I want white!
