Hello,
I just got an iPhone4 over half a year ago and found it was locked to ATT. As I am in China, thats not much use to me. Can you help me unlock the device so I can use a local carrier ?
I can pay for it.
Thanks

You need to pay Apple for an unlocked iPhone4 or iPhone 4s. Sell your locked device, and buy an unlocked one.

The best thing you could do would be to build a time machine and go back 9 months, check the forums and see that they DO NOT unlock iphones, and not buy the phone.
How many times are we going to answer this question before people realize the iphones will not be unlocked?

I'm sorry for the confusion! An AT&T iPhone (first-generation, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S) cannot be unlocked when bought from the AT&T store, 3rd-party reseller or from Apple as an AT&T model...this is because in the United States, carriers are not required to unlock devices for use on other mobile networks, so, to trap us with their network, they require that the device, in this case the iPhone, be required to operate on their network exclusively. AT&T and Apple, due to policy and United States law, will not unlock your iPhone, and I'm really sorry about that. Their are third-party ways to unlock your iPhone, that cannot be discussed here, but they will void your Apple warranty, and could potentially damage your device. Also, be aware that warranty service...for any iPhone...will only be handled in the country that the iPhone was purchased in...so if you have any issues with your AT&T iPhone, or United States; factory-unlocked iPhone...you'll need to contact the United States Apple division for support.

That's an alternative...but not an official option. Haha.

It was true at the time of this conversation back in January, things have changed since then.
I am an AT&T employee and the postings on this site are my own and don’t necessarily represent AT&T’s positions, strategies or opinions.

calling will do no good, they cannot help. There is a online form that needs to be filled out, the link is stickied at the to of this form. As far as requirements to get it unlocked there are actual two different ones depending on if you are a current / past customer or never have been a customer
1. have a completed 2 year commitment on the iphone and can supply the account number and mobile number that is/was assigned to the phone
2. if you have never been a customer, have a reciept that shows the full retail price for the iphone was paid to a AUTHORIZED ATT retailer for the iphone - ebay, craig's list or the friend of a friend that has one in their junk draw that they will sell is NOT a authorized retailer
If either of the above requirements cannot be met then the phone will not be unlocked - for option 2 you will be required to FAX the documentation to ATT, emails are not acceptable. Since the start you have never needed to be a customer of att, you just needed to be able to supply the required documentation - it was there at the start and is still there.
