Unlock for an old iPhone 3G in Germany

Hello!

I know, normally AT&T never unlocks iPhone.... but I wonder if there is really no way to unlock an old 3G phone from AT&T. A friend of mine bought his 3G one or two years ago in the USA. He though that is was an unlocked one and so we updated it to the latest iOS version a few weeks ago. Then we realised that it is an AT&T phone and now we are stuck on an AT&T locked iPhone with iOS 4.3.

Does someone know a solution?
