I am also wondering about this. If they don't let me transfer it the competitors looks like the plans they have might be better.

I also have an iPad v1 with the unlimited data plan. In the area I live the competitor much better coverage than AT&T, specially with LTE. So if AT&T won't transfer my data plan I know which carrier my iPad 3 will be with.

Multiple articles quote AT&T spokespeople who have said those of us who have unlimited data plans for iPad WILL be able to transfer them to the third generation iPAD and have an "unlimited" 4G LTE plan. I put "unlimited" in quotes because it seems they have the right/will probably eventually plan to "throttle"/slow down data if we go over 5GB in a billing period. That's still a pretty good deal though as we'll be essentially be getting the $50 5GB plan for $30 and those who have the $50 plan will still have to pay $10 to get more after that limit and we'll get more over the limit just slowed. (I've got to say I use my iPad a lot and I never get anywhere near 5GB a month anyway.)
I transfered my unlimited plan from my 1st generation iPad to my iPad2 last year. I know some people just switched out their SIM cards and it worked; but I called AT&T. They need certain information that can be found in Settings under General: Cellular Data Number and IMEI and ICCID for the new iPad. (I see a few threads down someone stated they had called and was told the unlimited plan *couldn't* be transfered from a 1st generation iPad to an iPad2. I know for a fact this wasn't the case because I guess I was lucky enough to get someone who knew what he was talking about and knew exactly what to do back then. So if this happens when you call to transfer your plan to the third generation iPad, just hang up and call again until you get someone who knows.) I'm not sure if swapping the SIM cards will work now or not since it's the 4G LTE network. (Admittedly, I'm not so tech knowledgable.)
One other thing: I gave my first generation iPad to my mother and when I tried to set her data plan up I couldn't because the SIM card was "fixed" to my plan and of course, couldn't (didn't want to anyway) put my plan back on it because it was on my (then) new iPad. We called AT&T and was told we would need a new SIM card for the iPad 1. We also were lucky to get a slightly over helpful AT&T employee who gave us the scoop that we could get the new SIM card at either an AT&T store or an Apple Store but the AT&T store would probably charge us for it while the Apple store would probably give it to us for free. We went to an Apple store and they did give us a new SIM card for free.

OK, this is very useful info, dumb question, I have Ipad 1 with ATT unlimited. I want to do transfer as promised. But I want to pre-order new Ipad through Apple now. Should I order through the Apple site and select ATT and as my carrier? If so what do I do about having to select a data plan or can I skip that step. Any insight welcome.

Key question seems to be, since it is 4G does that require a call to ATT to move a grandfathered plan from iPad2(or 1) to the new iPAd?
No more microSIM swap?

Just to clarify though can the sim from the original iPad 3G be put into the new iPad to transfer the service or are the two sims different. I would like to put the sim from the new iPad into the old one as well since my wife will be using it.

The Apple site for iPad 1 & 2 say to change the SIM. Is that what we should do, or is the SIM for 4G LTE different?
Thank you.

I'm going to assume, unless we get different official info, that the sims are different. I've read a post where previously someone just went to their iPad account online and changed the IMEI and the other number to the new device which made the account transfer for them. When they restarted the original device they got the message telling them that they had not signed up for data on that device, so it appears making that change online also resets the original sim in the first device.

That's my impression as well. I'm going to assume the 2 sims are not interchangeable. My wife is going to use the "old" iPad when I activate the new one. So I'm hoping that changing the proper numbers on my account will transfer my plan while allowing my wife to get her own plan with the old sim.

Folks, just wanted to let everyone know - I've just transferred the unlimited plan from an iPad 2 (which I had previously transferred from a first generation iPad) to my new iPad 3rd gen that arrived today
. It worked fine - I've now got "DOM Unlimited Data LTE" for $29.99/month.
I'm a happy bunny ![]()

Did you do it by changing the IMEI, etc. online? Or by SIM swap?

Before I ordered my new iPad, I called AT&T's CS to confirm that my current Unlimited Data Plan would transfer to the new iPad. I was told it would. I then asked what exactly I needed to do to make the transfer. The person didn't know but put me on hold to ask someone who did. I was told that I needed to take my new iPad to the AT&T store and that they would make the transfer for me. I thought that was odd, since I never had to take my iPads to the store before. I was able to make the transfer from my first iPad to my iPad 2 myself online, but both of those iPads were 3G, so maybe switching to 4G required more steps?
However, to make a long story short, I decided to try it myself this morning anyway. I powered up my new iPad (how wonderful that you don't have to hook it up to a computer anymore!) to set up and when it guided me through the Cellular Data setup, it said I could log in with my existing account, which I did and the Unliminted Plan was automatically added to my new iPad. I then went online at
https://dcp2.att.com/OEPNDClient/
and, under Edit User and Payment Information, I changed the IMEI and ICCID numbers to my new iPad's numbers. I then turned my new iPad off and then back on (to reboot) and now all seems to be working fine. I checked my Cellular Data Account on my new iPad which confirms that my plan is the "DOM Unlimited MB for 30 days - LTE domestic."
All of this took about 5 minutes. No calling AT&T and no trip to the AT&T store!
Good luck and enjoy your new iPad!!

I had original iPad with "unlimited" data plan. I transferred that to my new "New iPad" simply by going to setting>cellular data>turned on cellular data >selected view account and signed in with previous iPad1 data phone number and password. I was offered to select data plan for new iPad and I selected my DOM Unlimited and within minutes I had it on my New iPad. Oddly it was very easy; just be sure to select the unlimited plan you had in the menu offering.

Keep in mind that AT&T has started throttling unlimited data plans for iPhones at the 3 GB level ( same $30 cost of the limited plan). I would be surprised if they did not do the same for the iPad although I have not read anything about them doing so.

I followed the instructions posted by others for moving my flat rate data plan to my new iPad. when setting up cellular service after logging in with my old account number, I did receive the unlimited plan option and selected it. When I later logged in to check my account status, the IMEI and ICCID numbers had been automatically changed to my new iPad. Yet, no cellular service. Is there something simple that I am overlooking?
