Sim Card from LG P-505 to Iphone

Could I buy an iPhone off ebay and take the sim card out of my LG Smartphone P-505 and put it in an iPhone, I already have a data plan, I really do not want to renew my contract right now..

There is no requirement to renew your contract if you have your own device. The iPhone 4 and 4s use a micro-SIM, the iPhone 5 uses the new nano-SIM. You can stop in any AT&T corporate store for a new SIM. There may be but usually isn't a charge to replace the SIM. You will need to change your data plan to an iPhone data plan though.

I was told my sim card would work in an iPhone 3, not a 4 or 5

Your current SIM card (regular sized) will work in the iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS only. If you wanted an iPhone 4, 4S, or even the 5, you will need to either cut your current SIM card to fit the slot of the smaller card trays, or get a new one. I would suggest to simply get a new microSIM if that's the case.

If you want to keep it simple, just buy a 3GS. I would totally recommend the iPhone 4 at newest, though - there are many significant advantages between the two.
