Finally got it activated after about 4 hours. I just kept trying the activation process over and over by hitting the home button and selecting "Try Again"

The solution is to drop this carrier. AT&T sucks. You would think they would have learned from the last iphone release. History repeats itself folks.
I got this phone early this AM and havent been able to active since. I just spent 30 minutes on hold and got disconnected.
AT&T sucks!!!!

When I called AT&T support she had never heard of the "4S" and insisted the only way to avtivate was to use iTunes. Who are these people?!

I have a friend that had no problem with registration...got their phone and they were using it about 20 minutes later.
(of course they were on Verizon network...)

I've had my iPhone 4S for 4.5 hours and I keep getting the same error message.
The problem seems to be limited to AT&T according to CNET.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20120568-17/ipho
Has AT&T addressed the problem yet???

My patience with AT&T has just ended as well.
That their servers and personnel should be overwhelmed is not surprising. I can forgive them for not spending the money necessary to handle the spike in demand. Much less forgivable is the way they have communicated -- or, more specifically, chosen not to communicate -- with their customers.
I pre-ordered this phone a week ago and specified AT&T as my carrier. I am already an AT&T customer, and they have my email address and phone number. So why didn't they send me an email (or a text for that matter) to warn me that activation on the 14th might be difficult?
Worse, much worse, is the message presented when your activation attempt fails: "Your activation is still pending. You will receive an email notification once your activation is complete.” That much at least is clear, though how long roughly one should expect to wait for the email is not indicated (a few minutes? a few hours? a day or so?). But then, in the next paragraph, in much smaller type, it says: “We’re sorry There was a problem connecting to the server. Please try again later.” Whoa. Apparently I’m not just supposed to wait for an email -- I have to try again later. Or maybe I should pay more attention to the first paragraph since it’s in bigger type. What exactly am I supposed to do, wait for an email or try again? I don’t know. Probably, I should retry -- that seems most likely and can’t hurt. But then, after retrying a few times, I wonder, well, how much more time am I going to waste on this?
So that is why I came to this forum -- to see what the experience of other uses was so that I could get an idea of what to expect myself, since AT&T had not bothered to inform me. Fortunately at least there is that: other p****d off customers sharing their bad experiences. So my decision is made: when my contract is up, I will switch to another carrier. Verizon, for example, seems to have better coverage as well as better rates. Its seems unlikely that their communication with their customers could be much worse.
(Someone might say: Is it such a tragedy that you aren’t able to activate your phone right away? Would it really hurt to wait a day? My answer is, No, it’s not a tragedy, just an irritation, but a wholly unnecessary one. As for waiting a day, well, I am scheduled to leave on a trip later today, and I scheduled my departure specifically so that I could take my new phone along. I knew I was receiving the phone today. It never occurred to me that activation would be a problem.)

Hey all - I know activation is taking longer than expected. I have no automagical fix but I wanted to let you know that I hear you and I know you're frustrated. Your feedback is valuable and doesn't go unheard or unreported.
Activations are happening across the system. Please continue being patient and don't turn off your phone after you start the activation process.

Could some one address the confusing error message or respond to let us know exactly what is going on? Are we in a queue once the activation fails? Or are we suposed to just wait on this mythical email? Would it help if everyone stopped slamming the servers? A little bit of communication wouldn't hurt here, instead of just complete silence from ATT. This is an EPIC FAIL.
Are we getting charged an activation fee to experience this epic fail in customer service? Is ATT going to waive these fees since they managed to totally mis-manage this event? What was the expection knowing over 1 million phones were sold the first day?
Can you activate me now? How 'bout now?

I'm not even getting activation prompts, so I'm even more frustrated than everyone else. This was supposed to be my upgrade phone, and my old 3G continues to work while this one refuses to switch the number over via Wi-Fi or iTunes. Just keeps saying Phone Number: N/A whenever I plug it in. Since AT&T won't let me activate it via their website, I'm thinking I just paid $200 for a fancy paperweight.
And yes, the micro-SIM is in, but since it's a micro, I can't just transfer the one from my 3G over to make things easier. Nah, that would be too nice.
Tried restoring to factory settings and starting the process over, but it keeps throwing me back to the "enjoy your iPhone" screen without any activation prompts whatsoever.

Sorry, jamileh, but that just doesn't cut it. AT&T has failed and failed and failed time and time again. Is AT&T trying to tell us that they sold soooooo many more iPhone than Verizon or Sprint that their activation services are failing while the other cariers appear to be proceeding without a hiccup? This is a great symptom of AT&T and their nickle & dime strategy to actually providing, you know, real service (as opposed to the lip variety). At some point, the myriad failures of AT&T should rise to the level of criminal activity, and should be treated as such by the DoJ & FCC.

I'd just like to point out that the error is related to Apples new iCloud untethered activation process. It isn't AT&T as all the carriers are having the same problem. Guess that's a huge derail to this thread lol

Except the problems appear to be largely centered around AT&T, according to PC Magazine - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2394718,00.as

check updated articles. it is the apple servers. go to their support forum and read all about it. att just has many more iphone customer than vzw or sprint. same percentage affected based on ability to pre order.

I forgive ATT for everything. I mean stuff like this happens. Yes they should have learned from the past 3 other times. However, admit that you have a problem. Dont be a coward and blame apple, my internet connection, or actually accusing me of not paying my wireless bill. Excuse me? Not paying my bill? So now its my fault? Um no ATT i pay my $200 bill every month. How about you get your crap together and create a decent network with servers that work. Watch out, you got other competition with the iphone now.

The activation is actually handled by Apple's servers, not AT&T. If you are not using iTunes, try activating thorough it. that is how I was eventually successful.

I turned off my iphone 4s and went to this link: https://www.wireless.att.com/activations/ and I followed the prompts. Once done, I rec'd a message that my number was activated and for me to make sure the iphone was turned off, wait 15 minutes and than turn on the phone. When I did, it began searching for a signal and within seconds I was on!! Hopefully this will work for you as well.

That hasn't worked and still doesn't work. I just get a message saying that iPhone users have to use iTunes to activate the phone.

I bought my phone from Apple since AT&T wasn't taking pre-orders when they went live everywhere else. The e-mails I got from Apple tell me to use iTunes to activate, which does absolutely nothing. The number in the e-mails is correct, but nothing has happened, and I'm still using my 3GS since it hasn't deactivated yet.

Jamieh, I apprecate that, but I was told by the tech support to leave mine off until it updated. Then was told not to, after she had me reboot it three times. I have no idea if I am in queue or not. It's been almost 12 hours, and my other phone was cancelled. I took it in to the AT&T store, and they tried to do it and it said it was already activated on the voice verification line for the terms and conditions. I am beyond confused. Thanks for answering though.

I'm upgrading from 3gs to 4s and received my 4s last night (Friday night) and after submiting following link in my email to activate my phone still isn't activated (Saturday afternoon). I've connected to itune to sync my new 4s, but it didn't prompt for activation in itune. On ATT activation page it still shows device activation pending message for my account. I'm confused if itune has something to activate 4s or I just do online activation I'm trying?

Thanks for this link. I waited almost 10 hours in "pending" status for At&t to activate my phone. With your link it took only two minutes and I was up and going!!! So thank you very much. For some reason I can't give a "kudos" but I'd give you 18 if I could ![]()
