Att told me that the iphone 5 can have REGULAR INSURANCE on it. Then before I was going to place my order another Att rep told me you can only get apple care?! Other people have been telling me you can ONLY GET APPLE CARE. I want to be able to insure my phone like I do all the rest of mine with ASSURION. Does Att let you have Assurion for the 6.99 price on the new iphones or will they only sell you apple care? I need a straight answer before I place my orders. Thanks!

The other iPhones were made eligible for Asurion in the last couple of years. I'd advise against Asurion, however. The deductible is likely going to be sky high ($199 or so). You're better off seeing if you can get an electronics rider added to your homeowners or renter's policy, or looking at something like SquareTrade.

Oh ok... I didn't know that. I've never owned an iphone yet, originally didn't ever go for it because you couldn't insure it lol. I have renter's insurance now.... I didn't know you could put cell phones on your rider. I realized with asurion my deductible would be $199 but I figured that would be cheaper than full price if anything ever happened. That's before I knew you could add iphones to your renters insurance. I'm going to have to call my insurance company tomorrow and see how much that costs to add the phones. Thanks for your help! ![]()

My insurance company is USAA and I just made a phone call regarding a rider for the iphone and was told since this item is most stolen or broken, they would not cover it, not to mention all other smartphones. iPads yes. Unknown about other insurance companies.

So if you do the $99 AppleCare, that's $4.13/month and you get 2 accidental replacements for $50/each. In my experience, this is the best "insurance" you can get for iPhones. Plus, if you decide to sell the phone next year, the AppleCare is transferrable and you can advertise that in your ebay ad. That's what I'm going to do, and what several other people are doing.

I'm not with the same insurance company as you... but that's interesting to know. I still haven't been able to get ahold of my insurance office... probably cause it's Saturday lol. I'm going to try to call on Monday.

Jtrue - maybe I'm misinformed about what EXACTLY apple care is?? I thought apple care didn't cover certain damages like water, and dropping your phone... also I thought it didn't cover theft?? Those are 3 HUGE things that if I was paying for "warranty/insurance" on my phone that I would want covered. I would hope none of them ever happened to me but accidents happen....and there are a lot of thieves in the world after iphones unfortunately. Have I been misinformed this whole time iphones have been out?

As far as I know, it does not cover accidental damage. I'm planning to get a square trade warranty. It covers accidental damage although it does have the $50 deductible. The deductible does not apply if you need repair for something else going wrong. Plus with online coupon codes, you can get it for around $65 for 2 years.

Sure looks like insurance to me.
A insurance policy will replace a phone if it is lost, stolen or completely destroyed after you pay the deductable, Apple Care will not do this
http://www.apple.com/legal/applecare/applecareplus
Pay particular attention to section 4 of the terms and conditions... Apple care is NOT insurance coverage

Well since accidentals are most likely to happen to me, AC+ solves my dilemma. Thanks for pointing out that theft and total destruction are not covered.
I use AC+ but I would also check with your home owners insurance company. Some will cover this type of loss and the two policies together would be a nice compliment.

Ok so I read over what the apple care plan was and what I get from it is this: If you pay the 99 dollars for apple care at the point of purchase with your iphone 5... you will get your free 90 days software support plus 1 year of hardware support automatically and AC is ADDING basically another 9 months of software support (if you need to call those apple heads and "fix" something that's wonky with your software, apple apps, etc.) and then it also gives you one year added on to your hardware or "iphone." Now it does NOT cover theft, earthquakes, regular wear and tear scratches etc., but so it DOES cover your phone if you drop and break it as long as you weren't doing it in a malicious way... correct? You would just have to pay the 49 dollar deductible right? I know apple care isn't "insurance" per say but it kind of like "extra warranty" then right? I also read there are only 2 times an accident can happen too, then they cancel your apple care. I'm not too worried about my phone being stolen since it's hardly ever out of my sight (so it's ok if AC doesn't cover that) but if by chance I drop this glass phone and the screen shatters I want to make SURE it's covered by something! I'm just trying to find the cheapest way about going about it and I've never had apple care for ANYTHING so since it's NOT insurance I don't even know what exactly it is? Thanks for your help! ![]()

State Farm stopped covering it last year. They said they were losing their shirts on the policies. We had 2 IP4 phones insured for $88 total and no deductible. When we got the 4S and tried to add them to our policy, they discontinued iphone insurance.
Also keep in mind that when people file a claim against their own insurance policy, that makes them a possible higher insurance risk--however miniscule an increase of risk that may be--i.e., I've never heard of anyone who filed a loss claim against their own insurance policy and was subsequently deemed a better risk compared to someone who's never filed a claim, all other things being equal. I know I'm speaking the obvious here, but insurance companies aren't in business to make you whole in case of a loss; you can bet your bottom dollar that they will attempt to recoup the losses from all those iPhone claims in the form of increased premiums spread out somewhere.

Ok there is a difference between apple care and apple care plus, you must understand this. Apple care has a deductible of what contract rate is like for a 16g it is 199.99 if it is your fault it broke (water damage so to say) or else they will replace it free. If you do not want to go to the store a new one is next day aired to you, with a credit card hold and there is a shipping slip that comes with the new phone, you simply put the broken one in the box and put it back in the mail. If apple decides it is your fault it is broken your credit card is charged the 199.99. You can do this as many times as you need to in the 2 years it is valid. The apple care plus now covers 2 accidental damages for 49.99. Where the regular apple care does not, also apple care plus you only have 30 days to add and ac you have 90, if you call apple with out these and want them to help you it is 19.99 each time plus the full cost of a new iphone. So initially the big difference is the price of the deductibles, and the price of the care plan where plus is 99.99 and ac is 69.99 hope this helps just a little
do not believe apple care is available any more - just apple care plus - that is for the iphone/ipad/ipod, apple care is available for the other products

OK let's clarify this.....
Applecare no longer offered. Extended the warranty for an additional year but did not cover accidental or liquid damage. The Genius had discretion to extend coverage/replacement but that was not part of the purchased coverage. The $199 price, etc... Is the out of warranty price and not a deductible.
Applecare+ for iOS costs more than the old Applecare and now does cover accidental damage and liquid damage. Non-accidental damage is covered without any additional out of pocket expense. Accidents and liquid damage are covered by by a $50 deductible and a max of 2 times. Applecare+ must be purchased at the time of purchase of the iDevice or within 30 days of purchase but required inspection by an Apple Genius to ensure there is no damage.
