I am also told they cannot cancell my order.

I have an IPhone 4S on hold for me at an apple store as of today and one ordered through ATT last week. If I could cancel the ATT order and upgrade at the Apple store I would be a happy man. Instead ATT will not cancel the order and make me wait another 20 days for the phone. All while I build up more frustration which will eventually make me leave ATT for Verizon.
I do not understand the logic behind this. Why cant they just go the easiest route for for the customer. Either way they get the contract.
Is there a trick to getting this done?

keep calling back until you get the right person that will help you. they can cancel the order and restore your upgrade date. just keep calling them.

As long as your original order is still on backorder status AT&T can cancel the order. If you ordered in one of AT&T's stores you will need to go back to the store where the order was placed and speak to the store manager. He/She is capable of doing this so don't take no for an answer.
