Huge increase in alleged data use on iPhone 5

I don't know how many other people have had similar issues, but my data use has supposedly skyrocketed since getting the iPhone 5. My average monthly use over the last two years has been 200-400mb, with one monthly being significantly higher at 600mb.

Now I'm sitting at over 1Gb of data use. While reading the New York Times website on my 30-minute bus ride home yesterday, I supposedly consumed over 100mb of data. During my drive in this morning while reading a couple other news stories, there was another 35mb added.

I called AT&T yesterday, and the gentleman on the phone said that he wasn't aware of any issue but that assured me that I wouldn't be charged for any incorrect data overage charges. I was glad to hear it, but I'd like to make sure the issue is resolved and that I don't have to constantly be fearful that I'm now somehow tearing through massive quantities of data during normal use.

Has anyone else on AT&T had this issue with their new phone? I've seen other claims similar to this on other message boards, but not many on AT&T's website yet.

Just as another example, I left to go to lunch today, and had used 1207.85 gb of data when I left. I read news stories on NYT website for 20 minute, and when I got back to the office my data now says 1414.7 gb have been used.

There are a lot of reports of this issue on all of the carriers. Apple has not responded yet, but since all carriers are involved, it looks like an Apple issue. There have even been reports with other versions of the iPhone after upgrading the operating system.

iOS 6 will use cellular data even when it is connected to WiFi. Verizon has acknowledged it and Apple has kind of admitted it. Apple issued a patch for Verizon phones and Verizon is credited customers who are incurring overage charges.

I don't think this is the same issue as mine, for better or worse--when I'm connected to a wifi network it doesn't seem to affect my data usage. As soon as I'm not on wifi though, data seems to flow through my phone like a drain.

As another piece of info, I did a test and found that reading 10 news articles on msnbc.com used 3.6 mb of data. Reading ten websites on NYT website consumed 41.13 mb of data. How could a site that like consume so much data?

Were the sites designed for mobile access? If not they may use significantly more data. Sites optimized for mobile use are designed to use less data. Also if there were a lot if pics that will eat up data as well. Lots of variables to consider.

The problem seems to be related to iOS6. I show that my entire family is using cellular data during times that I expressly know they are at home and using a rock-solid Wi-Fi network.
